Been trying to make AI music like the bands I was really into growing up and this is the first time I’ve thought my teenage self would’ve really liked it www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewEL...

Good point! My digging suggested that brick and mortar stores actually just use a ton of energy to run normally that seems to cancel out the air freight cost. I'll circle back on this.

Been trying to make weird drone metal with AI. This one kind of sounds like the guitar is screaming starting at 1:20 www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVvW...

Great day for AI water use info

Autocorrect, should be β€œprompting” not promoting

No one who says this ever actually includes the results of dividing the training cost by the number of users the model gets. When you do that, the water cost of training shrinks to around 10-30% of the water cost of promoting. It only looks big because it’s concentrated at the beginning

*SPOILER* There are some ridiculous wild moments in the books. The third book starts assuming you know all this and runs with it to some very fun goofy places.

Ordering Amazon deliveries is often better for the environment than driving to buy the stuff in a store Driving is so bad for the climate that anything you can do to drive less is usually pretty good

Yup, I did end up writing this anyway and made it clear that walking and biking is preferable to getting deliveries andymasley.substack.com/p/ordering-a...

This is actually pretty outdated so it still seems worth writing

I was gonna write a post about how it seems likely that the average Amazon order is better for the environment than driving to pick up the thing yourself, but people already went and did a great deep dive on that. Seems to be the case, but only slightly generationim.com/our-thinking...

And… man. "what happens if we build something that is capable of doing vast swathes of knowledge work roughly as well as the median human" does feel like a conversation people who care deeply about equality, fairness and human flourishing ought to be having

I think this is more than just trusting people’s judgment though, we need to allow them to pursue and spend some small amounts of resources on stuff we think is silly. I don’t go around condemning Funko Pops as bad for the climate even though I think they’re silly and they use energy to produce

My claim isn't that there aren't other facts, just that those facts ultimately reduce to describing physical processes.

I think it's much more arrogant to assume that our human myths and mental structures we use to guide our thinking are somehow tapping into a higher reality of complex objects.

You're very strongly implying that this is the one correct view of art and if I say that it's fine if art is ugly and that's a separate question from how it was produced, I've misunderstood something fundamental about art.
