It's such a beautiful poem. One of the first ones I ever decided to own! (Memorized!)

The Darkling Thrush
by Thomas Hardy

I leant upon a coppice gate
      When Frost was spectre-grey,
And Winter's dregs made desolate
      The weakening eye of day.
The tangled vine-stems scored the sky
      Like strings of broken lyres,
And all mankind that haunted nigh
      Had sought their household fires.

The land's sharp features seemed to be
      The Century's corpse outleant,
His crypt the cloudy canopy,
      The wind his death-lament.
The ancient pulse of germ and birth
      Was shrunken hard and dry,
And every spirit upon earth
      Seemed fervourless as I.

At once a voice arose among
      The bleak twigs overhead
In a full-hearted evensong
      Of joy illimited;
An aged thrush, frail, gaunt, and small,
      In blast-beruffled plume,
Had chosen thus to fling his soul
      Upon the growing gloom.

So little cause for carolings
      Of such ecstatic sound
Was written on terrestrial things
      Afar or nigh around,
That I could think there trembled through
      His happy good-night air
Some blessed Hope, whereof he knew
      And I was unaware

This immediately brought to mind one of absolutely favourite poems. 'The Darkling Thrush', by Thomas Hardy.

AI is bad for the environment, and the problem is bigger than energy consumption When asked to suggest solutions for environmental challenges, chatbots reflected biases. This could have harmful effects on how we understand and communicate climate change.

I'm going to try to publish a poem before the day is done, over at @alttextpoetry.bsky.social

It's a melancholy little piece about a Facebook unfriending.

Yeah, I know FB sucks... Ha! Anyway, I'll post later. Check it!

Again, this won't be a 'boom and blam' assualt. No weapon protects - or deters - trade wars.

They're just a nasty anti-human liability.

It is, definitely the more likely. But I still think there is a LONG way from here to there, and the real threat isn't from 'boom blam' conflict, but far more insidious and economic ones.

If the fascists win, it won't be by military action: nukes would be useless.

Yes, this administration is dangerous and cruel, but they are also shockingly dim and incompetent.

Opportunities are everywhere.

Make everything as hard as possible. Resist every demand. Refuse entry without a warrant. Donโ€™t take the buyout. Their problem solving skills are ๐Ÿ“‰

Some giant inflatable nukes ought to do the job without the risk unaliving everything... And this admin will totally buy it.

Presto! Problem solved.

I don't see any point in protecting the sovereignty of *any* nation if it might make the whole planet unlivable.

Nuclear weapons are a total affront to biological life. They are antithesis to humanity.

That's it. That's all.
