Just curious if anyone tracks #cobol here. GCC COBOL #gcobol was shipped last Spring. And we are interested in feedback.

04.09.2025 13:08 β π 0 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0The #GCC project just forked the GCC 15.1 Release Candidate yesterday wiith GCC #COBOL included. The final release preparation for formal Release is proceding nicely.

Just checked #GitHub. #doge and #elonmusk haven't uploaded the US Social Security #SSA code base yet! So Sad. tβs NOT proprietary! The Open Source volunteers are as deserving a shot at helping as #xAI, no?
14.04.2025 21:40 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Weβre pretty excited. The feedback from #GCC is that 15 is super close to being ready to put in the can. Of course thereβs all that documentation and publicity stuff to do then but days/weeks.

So the assertion is that C language (any language mid/back compiler) CAN NOT be extended to loop-unrolling vectorization? That loops are predominantly computatinal? In HPC these are real considerations. In finance and admin and the internet, not so much IMHO. Been in this conversation for decades.
14.04.2025 12:21 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Was just wondering what the life expectancy of a Web app is before it gets a new language, or framework, or theming. How would it compare to the say 40+ years of most #COBOL apps.
Kind of a question about life-cycle cost per line of new and changed "code".
Debunking #COBOL is an Outdated Language:

Nasty hit-piece. Still looking for the evidence it is the #COBOL #mainframe and not the Web front-end:

And user-defined functions are supported as well in #COBOL.
10.04.2025 20:30 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0#COBOL is a lot like riding a bike π. I relearned it really quickly once we started working with #gnucobol.
10.04.2025 20:29 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I've always wanted to learn #COBOL but have zero professional reasons and no extra time for it. But I definitely wouldn't blast out ignorant comments about a programming language I don't understand.
15.02.2025 21:07 β π 0 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Thanks. I'll be boosting this on other platforms as well.
09.04.2025 12:02 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0WHat #COBOL compiler are you using? COBOL has had CALL (procedures) since the 1970s and functions for years. Both are supported in GCC COBOL (in GCC 15 by May) and GnuCOBOL. Just saying.π€·

09.04.2025 00:01 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Now this is exciting #COBOL news! Data Streaming support for #COBOL. Designed to let COBOL process streaming data rather in addition to traditional Batch and Transaction processing models. The announcement on HackerNoon:
