Home Is Where the Heart Is #Grateful4I never thought a year would pass this quickly Jogja felt unfamiliar at first . The people, the streets, the food. There was a quiet kind of loneliness that lingered between the crowds. I smiled at strangers, wandered around the city, but still felt like an outsider. I thought, maybe that’s just what starting over, looked like. A little strange, a little lonely. For a while, my days blended into each other — work, my room, and strolling around exploring nearby neighborhoods. I tried new cafés, visited tourist spots, and scrolled through countless recommendations, hoping to find my rhythm here. But even with all that, the city still felt like a backdrop rather than a place I belonged to. There was comfort in the routine, but also an emptiness I couldn’t quite name. I didn’t think anything special would happen. Until one evening, a friend casually asked me to join them for dinner. “Hey, do you have a plan for dinner? We want to try this food.” That small moment became the quiet shift I didn’t know I needed. From there, things began to change. There was an afternoon spent walking around Ambarukmo Plaza just to “look around”. A morning spent trying traditional food at Pasar Ngasem. A little escape to Pantai Glagah Indah. A casual invite to a cafe where we ended up playing Monopoly. A shared laugh that turned into an inside joke. A conversation that stretched long after the plate were empty. That’s how it happened — slowly, gently. And before I realized it, I wasn’t just living in Jogja. I was settling in. I met them, my Jogja girls. Kind, genuine souls who welcomed me as I was. In their company, I laughed a little louder, breathed a little easier, and remembered how joy can sneak up on you when you’re not searching for it. And just like that, Jogja wasn’t just a city anymore — it was a feeling. They made this place fun. But more than that, they made it feel like something deeper. And maybe that’s why, one day, without even noticing, I understood what people meant when they said: “Home is where the heart is.” Because I felt it. Here. In Jogja. In them. To me, they are a kind of home. A home where the soul rests. Where I can be unfiltered, silly, tired, or excited — and still be understood. They’re the ones who make this unfamiliar city feel like a safe place.
