21.03.2025 16:30 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0might as well toss in some related ephemera to sweeten the deal. first, from Beatrice Han-Pile's incredible book on Foucault:
21.03.2025 16:28 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Article title: The Disunity in Genealogy: Foucault's Anti-Nietzschean Reading of History Abstract: Contemporary critical scholarship takes Foucaultโs genealogical work as a paradigm, and it is widely recognized that Foucault himself took Nietzsche as a methodological exemplar. Notably, Foucaultโs landmark methodological text โ โNietzsche, Genealogy, Historyโ โ is framed as a faithful exposition of Nietzsche. Contrary to Foucaultโs framing, however, this article argues that his account of genealogy is incompatible with and anathema to Nietzscheโs philosophy of history. Through a close reading of Foucaultโs essay alongside Nietzscheโs second Unfashionable Observation, it seeks to demonstrate that Foucaultโs account of genealogy is premised on an inadequately one-sided reading of Nietzscheโs more dialectical account of history and the ahistorical. Whereas Foucault presents an anti-metaphysical Nietzsche suspicious of teleological origins and ahistorical forms, Nietzscheโs essay in fact insists on the necessity of such figures as an antidote to historicism. Reading Nietzsche against Foucault, this article investigates the conceptual foundations of the contemporary genealogical method, suggesting that Nietzsche may present an alternative โ rather than precursor โ to the Foucauldian paradigm.
have you ever thought: I don't know Foucault, maybe knowledge isn't only for cutting? or: I'm not sure it's true that Nietzsche has two different concepts of origin in the preface to the Genealogy of Morals? you might be interested in my new article, open access from @theoryculturesociety.org!

i have come to feel that both of them (and 'pundit genre' they are a part of) are eating off of a fundamental revulsion not so much at the technology but the habits of mind of the people pushing them.
