Wage theft is a federal crime from January 1. A code shielding small business is yet to be released Wage theft becomes a criminal offence from January 1, 2025, giving small businesses little time to learn how the code will protect them.

From Jan 1, 2025, intentional wage theft will be a federal crime in Australia, with penalties of up to $7.8m for companies and 10 years' jail for individuals. But a code covering small business has not yet been made public.

The code also needs to be declared for the new laws to come into effect.

It’s crazy to me that I spent many Christmas retail seasons selling thousands and thousands of dollars worth of CDs and DVDs (one store I worked in would easily clear $100k a week), and now my daughter and her classmates are turning old CDs into artworks at school. At least she knows what a CD is 🤷🏻‍♀️
