How do reservoirs shape streamflow extremes in the Alps?

🌊 New paper from our team!

In his latest study, our #HYCLIMM member Jonas GΓΆtte and co-authors analyzed Alpine catchments to understand how (hydropower) #reservoirs influence #streamflow extremes.

The tragic landslide in Blatten gives me the excuse to tell you the story of how we found out Ice Ages existed. It's a cool story and the most important bit is rather similar to what's happening now.

Trump administration cuts to NSF will result in more than 200,000 FEWER people per year involved in basic science, training, and education - what should have been the next generation of US scientists. This isn't even eating your seed corn, it is setting your seed corn on fire and salting the earth.

Trump seeks to end climate research at premier U.S. climate agency White House aims to end NOAA’s research office; NASA also targeted

BREAKING from @science.org: The Trump admin is seeking to kill nearly all climate research at NOAA, its climate science agency.

Its near-final budget proposal would end all NOAA research labs, academic institutes, and regional climate centers. And it wants to fully end the NOAA Research division.

Hydrology Paper of the Day @kevinwallington.bsky.social on agricultural engineering of phosphorus management applications by control and reachability verification methods: a two-pool temporal model for topsoil similar to digital filters, and objectives reached via Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions.

Our reachability methodology describes outcomes from any initial condition for the optimal fertilizer strategy - complementing traditional scenario-based simulations that require predefined IC's and actions but can handle complex models. (7/7)

Adding a second objective to minimize temporary crop nutrient deficit, we show that small short-term deficits can significantly hasten progress toward the joint, long-term target. (6/7)

The time-minimizing ("optimal") path to the target takes 42 years, but includes a temporary, intermediate phase with crop nutrient deficit. Without allowing any temporary crop deficit, it will take 66 years. At status quo fertilizer rates, it would take 423 years. (5/7)

Through the computation of "backwards-reachable sets", we identify the minimum time needed to reach the target from any possible initial condition. This approach complements scenario-based simulations where predefined initial conditions and management actions are required. (4/7)

We then derive the fertilizer rate strategy that minimizes the time needed to redirect the soil phosphorus system to achieve this joint management target. The time-minimizing strategy is β€œbang-bang”, meaning it switches between the minimum and maximum allowable rates. (3/7)

As a preliminary, we build a simple, two-pool phosphorus model and define a soil phosphorus target that simultaneously supports both agricultural productivity and water quality goals. (2/7)

New paper! Of my dissertation contributions, I'm most proud of this one – applying reachability and optimal control methods, we find that it will take 42 years to reach management targets for soil phosphorus levels in the U.S. corn belt.🧡(1/7)
