Nescafe is standard here! Unfortunately that's the one that was £7.80, which I'm sure is cheap by some standards, but expensive for me, whereas the supermarket own brand was literally a third of the price 💀

I had to admit defeat in the coffee aisle, because I was DETERMINED to get some decent instant coffee for once, but I just...I just couldn't bring myself to spend £7.80 for the one I really wanted, so I got the gross £2.65 jar instead as usual, I am working my way up here, baby steps!!

one of my resolutions for this year is to spend more money on food, since I'm tired of eating crap just because it's cheap, and so far the most difficult part is to not just break down sobbing in the supermarket, it is soooo expensive to eat in any kind of somewhat healthy way my goddddd

whereas polling from Ipsos and YouGov consistently puts people who plan to eat pancakes on pancake day at around 60-80% 😂

worth noting out of interest that only about 12% of British people describe themselves as ‘Anglican’ & around 46% (as of 2021 census) as any flavour of ‘Christian’, so tho there certainly are plenty of people observing these religious events, they’re just not nearly as ubiquitous as in the states!

I am exclusively interested in holidays and events that involve a lot of delicious food, and Fat Tuesday sounds extremely promising in that regard

yeah it's weird that it's a cold medicine over there, in the UK we just use Benadryl for allergies, it won't do anything for a cold!

the cookies thing is the most annoying to me personally, because for some reason even the cheapest grocery store cookie there is miles better than our best attempt here, and I cannot figure out WHY, what do they PUT in those things, it’s just a cookie!! They don’t even have that many ingredients!!

but the cold medicine you can just get like…over the counter in Wallgreens or w/e is *astounding*, it’s like being back in the Victorian times where you could buy those cures that were basically a bottle of laudanum and cocaine

(I personally would also add milkshakes and the standard practice of giving you a jug of water in restaurants without having to be asked to that list)

my colleague came back from holiday in the USA and we spent some time commiserating on how incredible both American cookies and cold medicine are, two thing that we all agree the US is vastly superior on

I've started watching 'Small Prophets' on iplayer, on my mum's recommendation, and I am hooked, dare I say enthralled, it takes a bizarre premise and spins it into absolute gold, highly recommend if you get the chance to check it out
