I think sometimes there's a madness that overtakes folks when they do identifications/moderations. I live somewhere with very few people, and I can't even *imagine* a big city full of half-cocked "experts."
Sure does keep things entertaining though? Hah.
Yep. I think a little kindness can go a long way, especially in the area of citizen science. The goal is to get more people invested in the natural world and to collect data about that world. You'd think the tone would be more welcoming.
But what do I know? I'm just a mere citizen. :)
It's a wonder we stick with it at all, hah.
That said: I do a lot of identifications on iNat and I know the sweet sweet pain that a bumbling newbie can cause. I try to be NICE about it, though, you know?
I accidentally misidentified a bird once as a rarity (clicked the wrong thing) and got an IMMEDIATE sternly worded email from someone I know personally. A man who is gentle and kind and sweet.
Maybe they put something in the moderator koolaid? Hah.
Aaaaaaaand we got some rain, but no thunder. From the radar map it looks like there was a small system that moved over us, northeasterly towards Howe Sound.
The bigger system stayed well to the north of us in the Powell River area.
And that's your Langdale, BC weather report, lol.
Glad we are well south of there! Holy cow!
07.08.2025 03:38 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0For the curious: I just downloaded season one of St. Denis Medical, because I think my husband will love it (it is HILARIOUS) and I love a good re-watch.
Also going to download a few dozen podcast episodes to my phone: @tpwky.bsky.social, @lionsledbydonkeys.bsky.social, and @ologies.bsky.social.
We also put all the plants that usually live on our deck railings up against the house, and we'll move the tomatoes and peppers and cannabis indoors if it kicks off for real here.
07.08.2025 01:14 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A fact of rural living: storms = lengthy power outages.
We are doing our usual storm routine: charging our big powerbank for roomie's CPAP, all our devices, and several smaller powerbanks. Downloading media because the internet will die most likely. Planning meals involving the camp stove.
The second I saw that storm developing my stomach dropped out. I hope it doesn't fuck shit up too badly over there for you. :(

06.08.2025 22:01 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Hoping for no thunderstorms. We do not need lightning strikes right now. Yes, it is raining, but everything is SO dry underneath.
Watching the impact of wildfire every year makes me slightly more anxious as each fire season progresses.
Go bag review time! Have you checked yours lately?
I've noticed that on the android app. Hope they fix it soon.
I haven't noticed it at all on the web version, and this is how I usually access bsky (on Chrome on my Chromebook).
It is, indeed, wet here.
Feels like the plants are saying thank you to the sky right now.
For the sake of my cannabis plants (outdoor, nearly ready to harvest) I hope the dry pattern does start later tomorrow, but I am still so happy to see these clouds.
Or, like, world peace.
But also the other thing.\
Tonight's wish:
that someone would show up at my house and say "hey, Matthew, let's go on a hike - where do you wanna go?" and then hand me a bag with granola bars and water and drive me to the Caren Range and help me take photos while we summit Mount Hallowell and find a marbled murrelet nest
a white trans man takes a selfie with a happy looking white standard poodle.
Teddy has been gone for a week.
We are all coping much better, but his absence is felt by all of us, all of the time.
Miss you, big boy. π

The crowd didnβt hesitate: βYESSSSSSSSSS!β
It's such a nice feeling to realize that you are brave enough, independent enough, and know enough about safety to know what it safe and what isn't.
I could say it sucks that you had to cut folks off, but also: it sucks so much more when folks should cut others off but don't/can't/won't.
Go you!
Fantastic as always. I learned *so* much, and I've been on SSRIs for a long time, hah. Thanks so much, Erins!
