Deftly handled business in the boardroom once again. Why was Graham pissed off with the process? Another offer? Pls share the power point!πŸ˜‚

The Mayday Diaries It starts with an all-consuming job and its associated terrors. But from a life teetering on collapse and the aftermath of grief, anger and illness comes reflection, redemption and the joy of every…

I'm delighted that Sharon Black at Pindrop Press nominated 'The Mayday Diaries' for the Forward Prize Best First Collection. Up against a zillion others of course, but one can live in hope! robinhoughtonpoetry.co.uk/the-mayday-d...

The Keeper’s Fear Of Taking A Goal Kick

I met Patrick for the first time in decades by chance.

He was already two pints in and we got talking
family, folk from school, jobs, mortgages, debt …

Much later, he said sometimes his gut felt
like a bucket crammed with eels
but at other times like a creel
full of lobsters and spider crabs.

But the worst was the night
he felt power cables
pulled taut till they snapped
and whiplashed like headless snakes
spitting streams of sparks
against the dense cloud
until the pylon of him staggered and fell
lay twitching on the ground.

As he was telling me all this I remembered him
the school genius, in his yellow keeper’s jersey
taking an entire minute to line up a goal kick.
Edging one way then the other
instead of just running up
putting his laces through it.

I ordered him an Uber.

The next day I skimmed a stone for him.
The loch was slick still.

The stone leapt several times, then slid along
before it leant in
under the skin.

Poem a day late for St Patrick’s Day with apologies to Wim Wenders for the title.
