I've become someone who wears lobster socks on a Thurs. Just because.

We've been innocently trying to control our lives in order to feel secure, which is not only impossible but it puts us in opposition to life.

Our littlest got her place at secondary school today, meanwhile her brother finishes Y11 in a matter of weeks. This photo of him doing a 'uniform rehearsal' for big school seems the blink of an eye ago.

The days are long but the years are short,my friends.

Absolutely, through awareness, honesty, curiosity & gentle reconciliation of what has been innocently exiled.

My internal dig at the other person, was a subtle yearning to take up space, speak my mind and not feel the fear of disconnection.

It's so subtle as it could easily perpetuate in the rigid framework of 'niceness' that has us smile sweetly for fear of being 'too much'.

Someone's clear request prompted a strong constriction in me. When I held the feeling, I realised there was resentment. And in that resentment was a squashed, unspoken part of me.

A side order of self erasure served up as being 'polite and palatable'.

It came to light in a conversation where I'd not been direct (palatable felt preferential) and then someone else clearly stated their needs.

Here's the giveaway; a visceral inner flinch.

Quickly followed by a judgement 'Oh that was a little pushy.'

My lens has been blurred somewhat by a belief around the importance of manners which appears to see being accommodating as preferential, which (by default) can make clearly expressing needs seem bold.

I thought I had this down about 'a clear ask' but it seems it was a theory not quite embodied.

It seems there are many chapters to the 'good girl' narrative.

I've written about achievement and conformity, but something more nuanced showed up around being 'polite and palatable'.

Rare night out with rugby mums for giggles and drinks. My son hasn't played rugby for years but that's a minor detail as the touchline social connections are too good to lose :)

Also made a change from Uber driving my kids to their social stuff.

What a systemic misunderstanding around 'productivity'. Space for connection, reflection, and just to breathe before the next demand is so vital. The irony of denying health & wellbeing in the very system set up to support it.

What does it mean to 'be with a feeling'? Well, it's not about engaging with it intellectually as this spirals into analysis.

It is to meet it, to breathe into it, not to change it (a subtle but tempting intention)..but to invite it to be here exactly as it is.

As a recovering recommender, I felt the vicarious shame of holding responsibility for people potentially not enjoying said recommendations upon reading your post. Then felt the need to articulate this as if it were an opening chapter of an Austen work. You know, just to be fully British about it.

Me: The hound's unrelenting adoration of my husband is so annoying. The wailing when he goes in a shop and the absolute disregard all others.

Also me: Aw she's so cute when she tucks her head under my arm & leans in momentarily.

Life moves fast, and the people we love don’t always hear how much they mean to us. Take a moment to say something kind, send a thoughtful text, or offer a warm hug. Small words can leave a lasting glow. 💛
