Reminder. If you are tenured or otherwise senior academic, the minimum number of reviews FROM you per manuscript submitted BY you is 6 (not the 3 you may think). Reason: unpublished newbies submit papers but are not asked to review. If you are doing less, you are part of the problem. #Academicsky

Ideally we could save ourselves resources and time by making submissions fit the journal at hand, or by channeling them to better fitting outlets (like Social Systems or Theory, Culture & Society).
And reviewers have the pleasure of reading papers falling into their interests and discourse ...
9/9
Not that AJS and ST are disinterested in systems theory or phenomenology, even if approaches like Bourdieu or American pragmatism are easier fits. But we would want to see how, e.g., systems theory can shed light on empirical phenomena, rather than dry discussions of its virtues and flaws.
8/
Unfortunately, I frequently get asked to review manuscripts from Germany that don't really fit this approach, and where the editors don't know who else to ask. With key references in German, with attempts to improve on approaches like systems theory or phenomenology for their own sake.
7/
For instance, @sociologicaltheory.bsky.social favors a particular understanding of theory, with a strong connect to empirical work. Discussions of ontology and social philosophy, normative critiques of contemporary society, and examinations of logical consistency don't fit the bill.
6/
I would say: We try not to care about whether our own work is cited and how. But we care whether papers cover the relevant work published in their area from the community behind the journal. In the case of ST and AJS, this includes mainly the faculty at North American elite sociology departments.
5/
So, generally, it is a good idea to look at the editorial boards of journals you submit to, also at well-cited recent papers falling in your area, to get a sense of potential reviewers and of the thematic interests, methods, and theoretical approaches covered.
4/
Actual reviews are solicited based on the fit with the expertise of reviewers.
For example, I frequently get asked to review papers on networks, relational sociology, and meta-discussions on the role of theory in sociology.
3/
Generally, journal editors recruit editorial board members for regular reviewing, mainly through personal connections and because they think them good judges of what fits / doesn't fit the journal. Often enough, they published previously with the journal (as I have in ST, not in AJS).
2/
I am honored / foolishly agreed to serve on the editorial board of @sociologicaltheory.bsky.social since January and as consulting editor of the American Journal of Sociology since February. This doesn't mean that I get to decide much, only that I have to review regularly for these outlets.
