I should have been in bed hours ago, but Iโve managed nearly 1800 words of a quite frankly epic battle scene โ๏ธ

Today marks the anniversary of the day that William of Normandy and his army landed at Pevensey in 1066

Death of Harald Hardrada at the Battle of Stamford Bridge.
Having two wives at the same time seems to have been fashionable in the 11th century. Here's a look at Thora, Harald Hardradaโs Other Wife
The Loki-inspired part of my brain wants to wander the streets of a busy UK city with my phone to my ear speaking Old English in what sounds like a conversational tone and seeing how long it is until someone accosts me for not speaking English

Todayโs delivery
Rather more in-depth than the previous book, but perhaps a less comprehensive inventory of the artefacts discovered. Either way, excited to read

This time next week I'll be in Tenterden to talk about the Anglo-Saxons: www.mytenterden.co.uk/events/tente...
22.09.2025 14:04 โ ๐ 16 ๐ 2 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 1It seems that after the abandonment of pagan burial practices, the place was turned to the enactment of criminal justice, and the execution of the condemned by the new regime
22.09.2025 11:58 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Post-Christianisation, it seems that Sutton Hoo was turned to another purpose. Some very-much-not high status burials have also been unearthed, as have the remains of a primitive gallows

Itโs been hypothesised that these may be the graves of the extended family of the Wuffingas not directly connected to the royal line

Middle Ages and Early Modern Period. The mounds are theorised to have been the graves of the kings and princes of the Wuffingas, the royal family of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of East Anglia
Thereโs also a second burial site located underneath whatโs now the Sutton Hoo Visitor Centre.
Alongside the famous mound at Sutton Hoo - Mound 1 - there are 17 other burial mounds, some of which likewise contain the trace remains of grand ship burials. The reason you havenโt heard of these is that most of them had already been broken into and robbed of all their treasure during the

Not thrilled with the repetition of โRedโ - โred deathโ, โswirled with darkest redโ - but want to avoid โcrimsonโ or โscarletโ. And given that Iโm talking about blood any comparison with blood is entirely redundant
Any ideas?

I might be wrestling to actually get the words down onto the page (โGet off Bluesky then!โ) but I have had an absolute brainwave when it comes to the final chapter. Iโm incredibly pleased with it, and hopefully soon I actually get to write it
For now, consider it filed away

Me to my wife: Why is writing so bloody *hard*?
Wife: Because youโre making it good rather than just putting it all down
Sheโs never read a word Iโve written but I appreciate the support โค๏ธ

Delivered this very evening! Excited to dive in and learn more about the individual artefacts that were discovered in the mound
The aim is to mention every single one of them at least once throughout what I hope will be a series of novels
