The Belgrano was an armed capital ship and still in the theater of operations.

This frigate was 2K miles away and apparently unarmed according to the naval review requirements

If she'd been armed it appears it would have been "lawful but awful"

India isn't a warzone. I have no idea where the ship was headed (if anywhere), although I strongly doubt her captain had any intention of entering the operations envelope of a US carrier battle group WITH NO WEAPONS

The Belgrano was an armed capital ship who was still in the theater of operations. An unarmed ship 2K miles from the Persian Gulf isn't even really comparable.

I have zero love for the Iranian Navy, so let's just get that out of the way. The ship was basically hors de combat with no offensive or defensive capabilities. There was no need to do *anything* at that point beyond messaging the ship to return to India. What the hell are we doing here?

So apparently the Iranian frigate was unarmed per requirements of the Milan 2026 naval exercises, and we knew the ship was unarmed and defenseless.

I really cannot understand the decision to fire on her accept as performative sadism.

Basically at war it's considered a VERY serious risk for a submarine to surface for an extended period while at war, and subs have no means to shelter POWs or take them on board

46 U.S. Code § 2304 notes exceptions for "a vessel of war or a vessel owned by the United States Government appropriated only to a public service" in some contexts. However, generally, providing aid is still a requirement unless it poses a significant risk.

Yeah my look-around of legal opinions seems to be that the sinking was 'legal' in the context of an established existing state of war, but that of course the entire war is not legal at all

Was she unarmed? That I haven't heard. The exercise wasn't live fire but it's highly unusual for a warship to not carry her basic load out.

Submarines aren't expected to surface and render aid. Modern attack subs have almost no ability to even do so.
