Bad Dreams by Tessa Hadley Last year I read and thoroughly enjoyed Tessa Hadley’s The Past, a beautifully-observed novel about four adult siblings coming together for a holiday at their old family home. It’s a character-driv…

Happy 70th birthday Tessa Hadley, #BornOnThisDay in 1956!

From the archive, my thoughts on BAD DREAMS, an excellent collection of stories. Chance encounters, new experiences & unsettling scenarios abound in this terrific intro to her work! #BookSky πŸ’™πŸ“š

I think that works for some people, whose first draft is just about throwing down ideas, but for me the first draft is the main draft - I only tweak it afterwards. So yeah, the heart of it is there from the start.

My first novel was published in 2015 and is now out of print - but of course you can still get the ebook! At just over a fiver, it’s a great read… a classic coming-of-age story. #booksky

You could write a novel with a number of characters each telling their story in the first person, in separate chapters. It’s fun to explore the same events from different viewpoints.

Several years in the protagonist’s life.
I did write a novel that was set in one day and that broke well into parts, too. With some books it just feels right.

Depends on the book. My current WIP lends itself to parts, broken up into chapters, because there are big narrative jumps between the parts.

That’s true. And when a novelist writes short stories there’s a danger that they’ll just be quick sketch versions of ideas for novels.

I like Maigret #books, but I’m finding the short stories a bit unsatisfying… like watching football highlights: all the goals but not the full match. I like the build up, the atmosphere, the distractions and the little moments of a full novel. #booksky #amreading

It’s hard to make money out of writing, but generally the best things in life are the things that don’t make money.

β€˜An absolute gem of a book.’
