I’m informed that we are sending the Lewis chessmen as hostages for the safe return of the Bayeux Tapestry. I’m happy to abandon them to their fate and keep the tapestry!

I’m very pleased to be talking for five minutes to the Birkbeck Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Worlds this afternoon about my currrnt research on the Inquisitio Comitatus Cantabrigiensis. But I can’t help thinking I should’ve picked an easier primary source to pronounce!

This is a fascinating read. I’m reminded of the charters of Charles the Simple in which he honours his first wife Federuna in grants concerning her marriage portion. I wondered if Otto’s charter of 950 did the same?

I have just submitted one article to Anglo Norman Studies and another to Early Medieval England and its Neighbours. Fingers crossed they are accepted.
