Idea: make rich people pay to keep this wondrous green space institution open to the public long-term.
And then go to city budget hearings this spring to agitate for it. Against NAβs who want it to wither and die.
Itβs intended as a fee, not a tax, not needing the public vote. This is why TUFs have been so popular in other municipalities. And why multifamily units strictly pay 70% what single family homes do.

As someone who agrees w/ you, I think no one expected the TUF to be as popular as it was and the gas tax sunset was a way to soften the blow of the new TUF.
Thereβs a case to be made for gas taxβs declining revenue, itβs bad incentives for the city, itβs instability and its regressiveness
While we are at it, advocate for residential & commercial rent controls. Portland may be seeing some in the near future
09.03.2026 19:08 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0In my experience this phenomenon goes deeper than just social media. Iβve been in many local furry group chats posting concrete political action items and thereβs definitely a phenomenon of burying them in posts abt pizza or cute animal pics. My methods arenβt owed buy-inβ¦ but I see no alternatives.

I feel exactly the same as you do. Itβs been very isolating personally.
I keep seeing self centering posts like βdonβt assume I donβt care b/c you donβt see me doing anything!β Like it doesnβt matter whether someone cares it matters whether the work of liberation gets done π
Homeownership is great if you can get it but itβs only valuable as an investment because some people cant have it. If we made it less of an investment our world would look very different

Note that the suburban cities *already pay their own TUF*. Portland tried to pass one multiple times since β08, but voters are not system level thinkers so we settled for a cope nominal gas Tax which doesnβt match inflation. We are now reaping the results of those choices

09.03.2026 02:15 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I canβt speak for Fischer. I think everyone interacting w/ this post agrees we need stable O&M for existing transit. Having seen transit get defunded basically in slow motion last year, I can say that many planners/electeds care more about PSC than O&M funding (not sameer! Love him!)

Single Family Home, Multifamily, and commercial.
Under most TUF schemes, MF units are charged 70% whatβs SFHs are bc they induce 70% the car trips, and
Commercial parcels will eventually be charged according to a function of sqftage and type of land use, but temporarily some % of wastewater bill
I never go to DB because the vibes are strange but when Im driving to deep ClackCo or WashCo, I very much FW Black rock's mint chocolate milkshake coffee... thing

Political capital*
08.03.2026 20:44 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Absolutely heard. Iβd trust the process a lot more if the Biden admin spent its capital building out robust metro systems and not meager streetcar projects greenwashing lidded freeway expansions.
08.03.2026 20:44 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Starting to feel like these projects are performative box-checking by planners as we actually defund transit ops & fund freeway megaptojects.
08.03.2026 20:17 β π 14 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0The effort prompted immediate pushback from businesses and residents who at the time were wary of any type of tax or fee increase, spurred in part by the shaky implementation of new voter-approved, specialty tax-funded preschool, homeless services and clean energy programs.
Also some really slick doubtcasting by black-belt underminer Shane Dixon kavanaugh

Conventional wisdom is that anyone in Portland who isnβt a millionaire is βtapped outβ on new fees and taxes.
If that is true, any fee which gains major buy-in from the public is something to be cherished.
And if βindustry voicesβ are the vanguard against fees, we should sit with that.
Yes it is! It follows the structure of Trimetβs board meetings which are on Wednesday mornings

Seems like a decisive victory for a strong TUF and Street Damage Fees. I would like to see the city consider a 100% street damage fee if we are going to go 100% TUF.
Concerned how much slide space is devoted to βindustry concernsβ about delivery fees considering the popularity among regular ppl.
Letβs say library usage was βdownβ 30% and there was a proposal to close βemptyβ libraries and the open house was at 9 am.
Would it be fringe and single issue to be upset about that?
Iβm fine with this
