It's January, which means the EGU abstract Submission deadline is fast approaching: Jan 15th!

So if you're in the net-zero world please take a look at: Towards net zero and beyond: remaining carbon budgets, negative emissions, mitigation pathways and implications for policy

Carbon dioxide removal is not a current climate solution β€” we need to change the narrative Drastically reduce emissions first, or carbon dioxide removal will be next to useless.

In recognition of us doing fuck all to reduce emissions, let me remind y'all that carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is useless unless we decarbonize drastically.

AERA-MIP: emission pathways, remaining budgets, and carbon cycle dynamics compatible with 1.5 and 2 °C global warming stabilization Abstract. While international climate policies now focus on limiting global warming to well below 2 °C or pursuing a 1.5 °C level of global warming, the climate modelling community has not provided an...

🚨Paper alert: The adaptive emission reduction approach was used to simulate 1.5°C & 2°C temperature stabilization in 13 Earth system models. Key findings: remaining carbon budgets 60% larger than in IPCC AR6, budgets evolve over time, pos. emissions under stabilized warming

Overshooting global-warming limits is a risky idea Analysis of climate pathways that do not comply with the Paris agreement.

This overshoot narrative is dangerous!
I outlined a few reasons here. Happy to discuss!

There is a lot of confusion about the strategic roles of CCS/CCU/CDR in climate policy. The umbrella term "carbon management" does not help, and decisions like the COP28Β GST text on "abatement and removal" techs reinforce the confusion. Highlighting the differences is important.
