From lived experience to policy, safety must be structural, not symbolic. If this field grows without clear standards, who bears the risk?

Most patients and trial participants I’ve interviewed say integration didn’t happen in-session. It unfolded in the months that followed, quietly, and sometimes disruptively. That’s the layer we can’t afford to overlook.

As someone who has lived this system from the inside, I’ve seen the difference between being consulted and being heard. The future of this field depends on turning listening into structure, not symbolism.

One small structural shift could change this: automatically notifying participants when results are published, in clear, accessible language.

Respect is not only about consent at the beginning of a study. It is also about communication at the end.

Closing the loop builds trust.

One keeps coming up across participants is that safety is not just clinical competence. It is relational competence.

And it doesn’t end when the session ends. Balancing deep therapeutic process with work, family, & daily life is part of the outcome story too but it's unmeasured.

Sometimes what institutions attend to differs from what participants actually experience. That gap matters.

Researchers and clinicians: what would it take to meaningfully integrate lived experience into your current workflow?

Some trial participants that I’ve interviewed have also mentioned wanting more agency when it comes to what music and how much music during dosing sessions.

When practiced well with a properly trained therapist, experiencing fear safely is one of the best features of this novel treatment.

Good clinical science starts by listening to those it aims to serve.

Thank you, Anne, for naming this. While not all hospital settings are the same, I can see how they can feel like a battlefield for some. I’ve seen thoughtful alternatives, for example, the space Dr Emma Hapke created in Toronto feels more like a cozy loft than a hospital room.

Number 1 and 2 are stronger. Number 3 needs much more attention.
