The idea of disassembly selection is to slightly alter the composition of winning communities at each round of selection to gradually approach the optimum. This works well for finding a good species combination but not necessarily for favoring ecological or evolutionary stability.

Artificial selection is a very promising way to improve the function of microbial communities, as has been done with breeding in other fields. We compared the performance of different artificial community selection methods using computer simulations, and proposed a new method: disassembly selection.
