How California energy policy is holding back a game changing climate technology OPINION: Without major changes to the way Californians pay for energy, we’ll lose the precious opportunities new electric technologies provide.

High electricity prices are the single biggest roadblock to decarbonizing buildings and deploying heat pumps at scale.

We can solve these problems, but it’ll take public awareness (outrage?) & policy changes.

I wrote about it in the @sfchronicle.com today - www.sfchronicle.com/opinion/open...

Fixed it for him:

"Last night in New York City, a single mother and her children slept at a homeless shelter because I, as governor, showered luxury developers with tax breaks, cut NYCHA funding, gutted rent laws, blocked tenant protections, and oversaw the loss of 150k+ affordable units."

This new Colorado law mandating health hazard labels for gas stoves is great. Stuff that emits health hazards like cigarette smoke should be sold with health hazard labels (and taxes, but we'll get there) like cigarettes.

Gas is gross.

Sens. Whitehouse and Heinrich Explain How the GOP Budget Bill Will Raise Your Energy Prices
YouTube video by Senator Sheldon Whitehouse Sens. Whitehouse and Heinrich Explain How the GOP Budget Bill Will Raise Your Energy Prices

I think it would be wise to make this elected Democratic discussion on the fossil fuel industry and electricity costs related to Republicans' anti-science agenda go viral.

Curious about tiktok edits anyway #EnergySky:

Why have so many moderate Republicans retired rather than stood up to Trump? In part, they are β€œsubmerged in social relationships.” Crossing Trump means losing cushy board seats and getting side-eye at church. Avoiding country club cancel culture won’t win a profile in courage but that’s today’s GOP

Because of the wildfire smoke that's been persistent all week in NY, my daughter's ecology camp has largely shifted to indoors.

Climate change really sucks. These would be beautiful summer days, if it wasn't for the 130+ AQI.

I love seeing floating solar projects paired with hydroelectric dams. Higher capacity factors on existing transmission without a need for batteries

Trump’s Total War on Wind Power Since July 4, the federal government has escalated its assault on wind development to previously unimaginable heights.

Also in my scoop-filled wind feature today in @heatmap.news

Anti-wind advocates and renewables supporters alike say the Trump team is laying the groundwork to potentially rescind permits held by wind projects that are *currently providing electrons to the grid*

Methane Hazard Lurks in Boston's Aging, Leaking Gas Pipes, Study Says - Inside Climate News Hidden beneath Boston lies a vast network of aging iron and steel pipes that leak natural gas from thousands of points under the city. A small number of these leaks emit large volumes of methane, a po...

Every time someone examines someplace new (extraction, compression, transmission, distribution, in-home), it turns out there more leaks we didn't know about. E.g., someone decides to sample the distribution grid in Boston, and finds:

It was a hard #9Av this year. Not for me personally -- I basically sat around and studied tragic literature, with a break to be tragic with others on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon -- but for the world at large, for so many people within it.

Hadn't seen them before... so cool! Love the built-in ERV with filtration. But: their lowest operating temp is -15C... not cold enough as a standalone solution where I live. I guess there are tradeoffs in what you optimize for.

Damn. This at a moment when the left is being drastically outspent, and small dollar donors are key. The Dem party needs to kill this monster - zero tolerance for any consultant or candidate that works with them.

The Mothership Vortex: An Investigation Into the Firm at the Heart of the Democratic Spam Machine How a single consulting firm extracted $282 million from a network of spam PACs while delivering just $11 million to actual campaigns.

I recently complained/asked how to stop (there were no good answers) the Democratic fundraising texts. A friend shared this piece about what a total scam it is: "$11 million of the $678 million raised from individuals has made its way to candidates, campaigns, or the national party committees."

IMO: You will only get the transition at the speed necessary if you use policy and regulations to shutter fossil fuels.

At the same time, that policy is easier to pass when you have better and cheaper alternatives at hand.

Why your energy bill is suddenly so much more expensive And why it’s not getting cheaper any time soon.

It’s controversial in climate advocacy world to say, but I’ve always avoided the electrification message.

In addition to walking into the rhetorical punch of what about higher bills, we walk into the specter of blackouts.

I lead w/ anti-oil/gas, not pro-electrification.

That's realism: it's bad, we need do stuff, and let's do stuff and make it less bad, maybe even good.

Doomerism and hopium are two most awful options. Feeling the fear and the hope and getting on with it is where the rubber hits the road.
