Threads is kind of built into Instagram and vice versa. Same company after all. They might split it eventually but its closely tied like Facebook. You can deactivate just not delete unless you delete both.

You can delete it, but you use Instagram to login if you want. I did that and it's a genius way to onboard friends instead of invite codes. I don't have to wait for codes and the app works right away and you have people signing up everyday. Also no ads.
