On the lookout for more UK/EU/Global librarians to follow. My feed is currently overwhelmingly US, and while it's important, it's real bleak (I'm so sorry) and I need to know more about what's happening here and elsewhere.

Report: Creating a 5-second AI video is like running a microwave for an hour
That's a long time in the microwave.
Soβ¦about AIβs energy useβ¦
ββ¦to create a five-second video, a newer AI model uses βabout 3.4 million joules, more than 700 times the energy required to generate a high-quality imageβ. That's the equivalent of running a microwave for over an hour.β

I have used genAI twice, once on DeepSeek, once on Claude. I will continue to track my usage, and I will be avoiding certain tools. If I start using it more often I will be following Siobhan HaimΓ©'s thinking and donating to relevant charities as a way to offset negative impacts.

So I choose to learn as much as I can about AI in our sector, while not shutting up about the environmental impact.
As is my right as a librarian π€£

Attending Librarian Futures: Academic Libraries in the AI Age this morning.
I think AI has shoved environmentalism to one side in terms of what we are talking about in the library sector.
But also I want to win a llama.

I'm proud that I was able to step away when I really really needed to and give myself an hour to try to decompress. I'm proud that I still managed to make 5000 words worth of notes even if some of them were 'oh crap I'm about to have a meltdown aren't I'.
