On the lookout for more UK/EU/Global librarians to follow. My feed is currently overwhelmingly US, and while it's important, it's real bleak (I'm so sorry) and I need to know more about what's happening here and elsewhere.

Report: Creating a 5-second AI video is like running a microwave for an hour That's a long time in the microwave.

So…about AI’s energy use…

β€œβ€¦to create a five-second video, a newer AI model uses β€˜about 3.4 million joules, more than 700 times the energy required to generate a high-quality image’. That's the equivalent of running a microwave for over an hour.”

I'm also a sucker for a library 'celebrity' so was delighted to realise Aaron Tay was the keynote πŸ˜‹

Also trying desperately to carve a niche for myself and develop skills that might help me finally permanently progress in libraries

I have used genAI twice, once on DeepSeek, once on Claude. I will continue to track my usage, and I will be avoiding certain tools. If I start using it more often I will be following Siobhan HaimΓ©'s thinking and donating to relevant charities as a way to offset negative impacts.

So I choose to learn as much as I can about AI in our sector, while not shutting up about the environmental impact.

As is my right as a librarian 🀣

Attending Librarian Futures: Academic Libraries in the AI Age this morning.

I think AI has shoved environmentalism to one side in terms of what we are talking about in the library sector.

But also I want to win a llama.

I too wrote 'it's a wrap' at the end of my notes for the day! Snapped this once the room was empty, something about the Lego, mugs, and balloons felt evocative of the day πŸ˜‹

Looking at my Lego Ursula is relaxing at least 🀣 what are you making?

15.05.2025 17:33 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I'm proud that I was able to step away when I really really needed to and give myself an hour to try to decompress. I'm proud that I still managed to make 5000 words worth of notes even if some of them were 'oh crap I'm about to have a meltdown aren't I'.

15.05.2025 17:32 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Not sure how I survived that but I did 🀣 fellow PTSD/ND/otherwise disabled people, what do you do when you have a 'bad day' happen when you've got a conference?

15.05.2025 17:31 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

A Lego related meltdown? That's a new one
