One of the problems with "intrusive thoughts" going mainstream is that people don't understand that the whole reason why these thoughts are *intrusive* is that they are *unwanted* and don't align with a person's values and views

A Tourette's person isn't abusing or insulting you when they tic. It's involuntary. Thinking it's normal to respond to a disabled person's involuntary tic with violence, is disgusting.

He directly referred to John in the interview and said if he was the one in that situation getting called that word, he'd assault him. Get the fuck out of my mentions if you're going to be this inept and illiterate.

I hate the fact that we’re still having to talk about the John Davidson incident at the BAFTAs, but I hate even more the takes I’ve seen from people that I assumed would be better on this issue.

Disability inclusion has been such a core tenet of my life, and I’m also Black so it just hurts.

These are the same kinds of "jokes" online that corresponded to an increase in hate crimes against Asian people back during Covid lockdowns. The stupid stuff we joke about online, or broadcast on TV, has real world consequences and always affects the most marginalised. STOP THIS.

These kinds of "jokes" are normalising violence against disabled people. John has already been beaten multiple times for his involuntary tics... by arrogant, ignorant morons just like this prick. Why are we not calling this out? Why are we platforming LITERAL HATE SPEECH against disabled people?

The rapper David Banner just said of John Davidson "I'm tired of black people having to take it ... I would have put hands on that white boy."

For those keeping count, that's the second "joke" (barely-disguised threat) issued towards John on TV by a celebrity. The interviewer replied "I love you!"

People will run their mouths on these issues with little understanding of what a film / tv schedule demands of a person (time and money burning = stress on the lead performer). And even less understanding of disabilities.

For example I remember people (long, long ago) giving Charlie Cox grief for portraying Daredevil. A "blind" superhero who can still otherwise see, using his super hearing.

Guys... blind people cannot do that.

People need to remember that there are practicalities that need to be considered. Disabled people's disabilities aren't slight inconveniences that they can shut off on command. They are disabilities.

At the preview this exact graphic was on the screen for ten minutes as people took their seats and I was just silently sitting there staring at it like... hell yeah Rob

Just found out that the young actress in this scene, Andrea Bisset, actually has Tourette's, and Rob ad-libbed his tics in response to her tics. The best scene in this movie is even better than I thought.

This scene felt like the movie letting go of the breath it'd been holding for its (sometimes gruelling) first 40 mins. Telling us that, actually, no one, no matter how unique their situation, is EVER alone. There's hope and community, we just have to be willing to take that chance and reach for it.

In one of the most exciting scenes ever performed, John first meets another person with Tourette's... her tics trigger his tics, his tics trigger hers, they tic at each other for like 2 minutes straight. It's a funny and nuanced scene of understanding. Two people feeling "seen" for the first time.

Once again I just feel incredibly lucky and privileged to get the chance to see these important films early. The movie ends with footage of the man himself and all I could think was how much I want to meet John Davidson and tell him how much I admire him.

This is easily one of the most important films ever made. It's driven by an incredibly believable and committed performance by Rob Aramayo. Often it's funny, but it's also very uncomfortable and heartbreaking. I left full of hope.

Seeing "I Swear" later tonight, believe it or not, at an advanced screening (it's not out here until March 26, ffs Australia... 😑).

In the end this is what he posted and I think this is the perfect statement to release. John Davidson very smartly gave no oxygen to the hateful bigots, while also refusing to bow to the cancel-happy ignoramuses (like the person above).
