When I first started, there was a high-end cabinetry shop next door. They filled dumpsters with hardwood drop and trim. I used to sneak into the dumpster and grab a stick or two most evenings. Once I asked about a specific piece and they offered their forklift for the whole load. Trim Lamp in oak

I often bring a piece into my studio that catches my eye and spend a year or more walking by it, waiting for it to be ready and for me to be ready to see the path forward. This piece took almost two years before I saw the way.

Each book has the name of a donor that helped make this Branch happen

The books are laser engraved with the names of donors on a piece of reclaimed, locally salvaged wood

This project was built ahead of schedule and under budget thanks to the overwhelming support of the community

Mesa County Libraries and the Mesa County Library Foundation built an amazing new branch library in Clifton Colorado and I had the opportunity to create the Donor Recognition Wall. Inspired by the books, I created donor plaques for each donor like the spine of a book. All from local reclaimed wood.

Here’s a closeup of the stack of three layers. Each one is treated with a different patina so the layers show through the negative spaces of the layer above it.

I had the opportunity to create the 2024 EDIE Awards for the Economic Development Council of Colorado. The awards were announced at the EDCC’s annual conference which was held in Beaver Creek, Colorado this year. I built the award out of a hollow Aspen log that frames a layered steel core.

It is an interesting wood to work with. Bottom of most people’s list of wood to turn to, but I love the character of the wood. Most cottonwood trees have lived hard lives and have acquired plenty of interesting detail.

It’s a long span and definitely has some dynamic nature to it. In fact the feet on the legs are designed to allow for that motion. Trees move in the wind. This bench sags a little when seated upon. It makes for a lovely seat. Especially located at the foot of a bed.

Stitched River Bench explores spars stitching across the resin pour of this bench. Made from pieces of worm eaten cottonwood, the bench celebrates the character of wood and is emblematic of my “flaws are features” approach.
