A detailed digital composite image based on the 1947 historical photograph of geneticist Barbara McClintock. McClintock, with her characteristic short hair and round glasses, is seated at a microscope, using tweezers in a Petri dish. While based on the original photo distributed for her AAUW award, this image presents a significantly expanded and fictionalized laboratory environment. The simple wooden workbench is now densely populated with a vast, colorized collection of complex glassware, numerous amber-colored reagent bottles, intricate distillation columns, and botanical specimens relevant to maize cytogenetics, creating a rich, illustrative narrative of her "jumping gene" research context that was not present in the original photo. The expanded background shows complex vintage laboratory cabinetry. This image explicitly states it is a composite: a digital recreation where Seriously Scientific has taken the historical figure and placed them into an augmented, complex fictionalized environment. Based on original source from Smithsonian Institution Archives. Digital composite by Seriously Scientific.

Remembering Barbara McClintock on International Women's Day!
She discovered that genes aren't static, they can actually "jump" around on a chromosome.

Her discovery of transposons ("jumping genes") fundamentally changed how we understand evolution and the complexity of DNA! 🧬🌽

An outline of a naked woman is embroidered on linen in the same bone white colour as the linen. She stands legs together, her right hand covering her groin, her left hand, palm up, extended slightly to her side. She looks to the right. Her entire body except for her belly is covered in intricate markings representing different neurological sensations. Her face is a mask of green lines, feathery grey lines cover her shoulders and chest. There is a thick band of intricate burgundy stitching around her waist. Her forearms and hands are covered in thick blue undulant lines. Her right leg has bands of burgundy along the muscles, with small dots around them. Her inner left leg has a thick line of blue running up it, with thin branches spreading towards her outer leg.

For this #InternationalWomensDay I’m sharing a symptomatology #embroidery, body map (2016), in which I stitched my #MECFS symptoms freehand over a few months. ME/CFS affects mostly women, and the symptoms are often ignored or not taken seriously because of medical misogyny.

Meme showing 2 pictures of the rapper Drake on the left. Top Panel: Drake gestures disapprovingly, perfect for expressing rejection or dislike of a less preferred option. The text says "women's day"

Bottom Panel: Drake points approvingly with a smile, ideal for showing appreciation or preference for a better alternative. The text says "Feminist Fight Day".

Reminder to all of you posting about women's day. This day is about fighting the patriarchy which has an impact on every gender, including cis men. This is why we call it Feminist Fight Day. DESTROY THE PATRIARCHY!

This is one of my favourite posts I've seen in ages 😅 For me, I've always had this weird Thing against Jane Austen. I know it's probably bollocks. I still want to try again with her work. But I've bounced off the same page in P&P multiple times in the last two decades and it's utterly irrational 💀

Imagine for a second the reaction if Iran had bombed a school and killed 100 children, not even in self defence, but as the first strike.

The first deaths announced from the US-Israeli strikes on Iran: dozens of school girls. They hit an elementary school in Hormozgan.

It doesn't make sense to me either, I've gotta say. I can understand falling and grabbing the first thing, which sucks from the off but sucks a lot less than injury. But that wasn't what happened here I don't think? Unless they were more affected by a moving train than I could see.

Welp, I've reached a new level of protective over my wheelchair, I felt my heart rate go up when someone leant on it (while I was sitting nearby on the train) and ended up asking them not to 😅 Dear public, short of an emergency, do not lean on walking aids whether or not they are in use 💀

In other words, all someone who wishes you ill has to do is buy an item off your wishlist, and Amazon will hand over your address.

How many educators, librarians, DV or homeless shelter staffers, or other community volunteers will be negatively affected by this?

For comparison, Greg Radick @hpsleeds.bsky.social recently posted about how he worked with biology colleagues to incorporate full lectures on the history of genetics, including risks of determinism & eugenics, into the department's main intro courses *before* students studied Mendelism.

Photo of a Southern Rockhopper penguin. He is standing body, head and neck stretched upwards under a droplets of water coming off an overhang of cliff just as any human might when enjoying a shower. the rock it's standing on is bare as are the rocks behind but the overhang has some covering of green moss as the stream runs here all year except for the hight of a dry summer (this years summer was unusually wet and the shower remained)

The Penguin Shower
On Saunders Island on the cliffs above where the Rockhoppers exit the sea, a stream runs over an overhang. The #Penguin queue up to shower & drink the fresh water.

This was an incredible treat: a visit to one of Diego Rivera's rarely seen murals, "The People's Demand for Better Health," located in a Mexico City public hospital and thus difficult to access. Completed in 1953, the mural is a sweeping visualization of forms of ancient & modern medicine (thread)

(& if you think all British people are white then you *are* being racist!)

21.02.2026 09:00 — 👍 14    🔁 1    💬 0    📌 0

Mocking other cultures’ foods is absolutely basic entry-level othering. From krauts to soy boys it’s a tactic we learn in the playground as a way to bully, and weaponise as a culture war as adults. And no “i’m only doing it to white people” doesn’t make it ok (Irish/Jewish food racism anyone?)

21.02.2026 09:00 — 👍 14    🔁 1    💬 1    📌 0

Oh no there is boring anti-British food discourse again. I know it starts out well-intentioned (critique of white chefs being ignorant about/appropriating other cuisines) but it always devolves into tedium, cliche and racism in the end. What a yawn.
I think less of you if you participate tbh.
