These detainees are risking their health to demand basic human rights.

This hunger strike is a powerful act of protest from people who feel they have no other way to be heard. It’s also a reminder that many immigration detention centers, especially those run by private companies, operate with little oversight and often put profits ahead of people.

One of the detainees, Pedro Hernández, had to be hospitalized during the strike due to health problems. Even in the hospital, he continued refusing food to stand with his fellow detainees.

They’re refusing to eat to protest the inhumane conditions inside the facility conditions that include filthy living spaces, lack of medical care, overcrowding, and mistreatment by staff. We’ve posted about these issues before, and so have many others.

The situation at the immigration detention center known as “Alligator Alcatraz” has gotten so bad that detainees have been on a hunger strike for over ten straight days.

Judge John P. Cronan of the U.S. District Court in Manhattan stated the court lacked jurisdiction over the case, explaining that lawsuits seeking financial compensation from the federal government must instead be filed with the Court of Federal Claims in Washington.

“I believe the numbers were phony… So I fired her,” he said, doubling down on his belief that facts can be fixed with firings. So if the data doesn’t flatter you, just get rid of the people reporting it. That’s how government works now, apparently.

Trump shrugged off today’s disappointing job numbers by calling them “phony” and accusing the Bureau of Labor Statistics of manipulating data to hurt him politically. His solution? Fire whoever gave him numbers he didn’t like.
