If you're in an institution there may be spaces nearby you can use, and I'm aware that you can leave the conference building and go elsewhere, but it would be nice to be near all the action if you just need to dip out for a little while - hiding in the bathroom is only comfortable for a short time.

I do wish more conferences had reliable quiet spaces though. People often say "Don't attend every single talk/session" but there often isn't really anywhere to go if you don't want to be in the main room.

One of the best things about conferences is the food, hands down. I've never been to a conference where the food wasn't at least good, if not amazing*

*I don't have any dietary requirements, which I can imagine would make these situations a lot more difficult.

Shwmae Bluesky - long time no post!

Today I'm at a writing retreat hosted by our Doctoral College! Being fully transparent, I'm currently procrastinating getting started on the 2nd writing block 😅 In the 1st I managed 764 words which is great!

Aiming to finish this mini-lit-review-thing today 🤞

Hearing about what's happening to my fellow scientists across the pond is so disheartening. This will damage the public understanding for years to come 😔

I love using notion! it helps my ADHD brain that needs things in specific 'buckets' or they just dont exist 😅

...depending on what you're using them for. I use rubidium vapor, which has it's own pros and cons. People also use diamond, cold atoms, superconducting materials etc. It depends on how your information-containing-light is created. Feel free to ask for further clarification :) 2/2

More adventures in getting ADHD meds and being slightly more medically complex than average:

I’m having a brief meds pause, as I need to have a specific eye test. Having to have air blown in your eye to check for glaucoma is really quite strange, and while it’s important my eyes are watering so bad

Things you never expect to say to your supervisor:

"But Carrie, elbows are IMPORTANT!"

I love my PhD (most of the time), but I am looking forward to a break over Christmas to read and eat and be merry, and to hopefully also make some content that I've been waiting a while to make!

And it bluescreened on me yesterday morning when I dared to run code and try and open Notion...maybe Windows has it out for me. #PhDSky

It's day 5 of the meds and so far, no awful side effects 🎉
My dose goes up on Sunday so we'll see if that's still the case next week.

I'm finding it slightly easier to focus and get stuff done, but nothing to write home about.

I do miss my morning cup of coffee though.
