I'll give that one a look! Thanks! ^^

These are just my thoughts after doing cursory research and testing over the week.

Many people may just opt to try to get around the age verification, but I'm also concerned about Discord scraping private data from DMs and servers.

Let me know if you guys have any other suggestions or plans!

[Teamspeak]
Not open source, but does allow for self-hosting. TS has developed a lot over the years. If your main priority is voice chat and gaming as a group, TS might be a decent solution.

Like Matrix, running your own server does require some effort or money, but it's way easier than Matrix.

[Matrix Cont.]
The downside is that it doesn't seem convenient to spin up your own servers. From my understanding, creating a Matrix server isn't as simple (or cheap) as clicking "Create New Server" in Discord. This will be a huge turnoff for the average user.

[Matrix]
Matrix is not a platform, but a protocol. This means that, as far as I'm aware, anyone is free to develop their own apps around it. This allows for different people to offer different options rather than one company (Discord) ruining it for everyone. Matrix is also big on security.

16.02.2026 17:57 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

[Stoat Cont.]
Stoat is also a very young platform and is missing some QoL features that users may expect.

Discord had a similar start when Skype fell out of favor. While this may seem nostalgic to some people, it's more "deja vu" to me: what happens if Stoat follows Discord's footsteps?

16.02.2026 17:57 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

[Stoat Cont.]
If Stoat centralizes accounts and a user is banned for TOS violation, would they still be able to access their self-hosted server?

TOS can change, and being banned for a TOS violation isn't always black and white (Discord once banned a user who made a bot to detect predators)

[Stoat]
I've eyed Stoat/Revolt, but I have some concerns with self-hosting. Stoat is UK-based, which requires them to be in compliance with UK age verification laws.

Likewise, and I may be wrong about this, it appears that Stoat centralizes accounts, which means you must comply with their TOS.

Any experience in the world of cybersecurity will teach you that "convenience" and "privacy" are two ends of a slider.

Many people are going to prioritize convenience, and I don't blame them. I'm generally looking to prioritize privacy through self-hosting and open source alternatives.

I planned to address the Discord news as soon as it was announced but I've been crazy busy lately

I do not intend to stick around on Discord much longer. As hard as it is, I don't recommend you do either. I would not give Discord ANY personal information.

As for where to go, I'm still deciding

Krita's native linux build seemed to work fine, so that also ruled out driver issues. I played around with some config stuff in Bottles thinking maybe it was a performance thing, but nothing seemed to affect it.

Yeah truthfully I'm not sure what causes the problem. My theory is it's actually not drivers, but rather something related to running it through Wine.

I tried no drivers, various XP-Pen official drivers, and OpenTabletDrivers and all had the same result: jagged lines when using slow strokes

In case bsky compresses the crap out of the instructions:

Go to File > Preferences

Uncheck "Use Mouse Mode in Tablet Driver Settings"
Check "Set tablet operation area with application"
Select "Run on All Monitors"
Select "Operate with Whole Tablet"

-- CSP on Linux Update --

After using CSP on Linux through Bottles for a few prolonged sessions I noticed that slow brush strokes with low stabilizer were appearing really jagged

I messed with some settings that seem to work as of right now. Will continue to update if any developments occur!

13.01.2026 04:26 β€” πŸ‘ 60    πŸ” 19    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Hopefully it works well for ya! ^^

One other hiccup I noticed is that I do need to have my tablet turned on before I open CSP, otherwise it doesn't seem to detect it correctly. I may have also needed to re-plug it in. But once it detects it, everything seems to work fine!

Oh I forgot to mention: I also can't seem to open files by double-clicking on them. CSP gives me an error saying it can't find the file. I can still open them through the File menu or by dragging them into CSP though, so it's not a huge deal

01.01.2026 02:20 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I also finally figured out why my tablet (XP-Pen Artist Pro 15.6) was leaving big fat dots on my canvas randomly: Turns out the buttons on my pen were phantom-clicking. I opened the pen up, took the plastic button piece and flipped it around. Seems to have helped!

01.01.2026 02:19 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I also have had situations where my lines were a tiny bit scraggly, but that also might be a driver issue. Hard to tell! Only really notice it when using brushes with 0 stabilizer.

In summary: If you're trying to get CSP on Linux, I would use Bottles, and *not* Lutris.

Update on CSP for Linux!

I was able to get it working pretty well following this tutorial:

Only issue I've had so far is my tablet's scroll wheel is a bit weird when trying to change brush size, but that might be a driver issue

I've run into a few minor bugs, but overall the experience is still smooth! It's at the point where I don't consciously notice that I'm on a different OS -- it's just my computer to me.

It also solved the issues I had with my PC waking itself up and the "Update and Shutdown" bug on Win10 @w@;;

I think I've heard some people say they had trouble getting CSP to work with Proton, but I can definitely look more into it! It's certainly worth a try! :)

Thank you!

For the moment I'm just dual booting into Windows for a couple of specifics: a couple games and now CSP.

I've used Krita before and it's pretty good (I know some amazing artists who use it, too!) but it definitely lacks some of the bells and whistles of CSP...

I'll let ya know how Bottles goes! ^^

Gonna try running it through Bottles but it's all Wine under the hood so I'm not very hopeful! Just wanted to be real with y'all about the hurdles I've run into

All that to say, I'm still very happy with Linux! My PC feels like it runs way more efficiently, and doesn't sound like it's trying to die

Update on the switch to Linux:
Still going strong! Still enjoying the experience overall!

I did want to mention that I tried actually drawing with CSP through Lutris and it is not a very good experience. My cursor kept flickering between the grab tool and my pen, and a few other annoying hiccups.
