So we go to see “Austin Powers” number three and settle into the theater. I have never, ever, laughed harder and had more fun at a movie. It was the most joyful and enjoyable movie experience, mostly because of what led into to it. In rewatch, I don’t laugh as much as I did then but it still lingers

So one weekend we asked if we could leave Fort Jackson and go see a movie in Columbia. The sergeants got approval and the few of us ordered a cab and went to a Chilis or Applebees or something by the theater. We had cocktails with dinner and after several months of no alcohol … well it was good.

After basic training, I ended up as a “security holdover” as I waited for the army to process my clearance (it’s the exact bureaucratic hell it sounds like). We had cool sergeants that supervised the few of us. They drove us to our daily duty work on weekdays, but otherwise we were free.

When you're supposed to be in charge of a co-equal branch of government, this isn't really the flex you think it is.
