The flight never took off and he was sent back to solitary confinement in the Texas facility along with the other 12 detainees, mostly from Asian countries, the immigrant's lawyer, Johnny Sinodis, told NBC News. The immigrant requested anonymity due to fear of retaliation. The immigrants, including people from the Philippines, Vietnam, Laos and Mexico, would later learn that their attorneys filed an emergency motion after reports that the Trump administration had planned to send a group of immigrants to Libya.
NEW: @nbcnews.com confirmed last night that the Trump admin almost sent a dozen men from Vietnam, the Philippines, Laos, and Mexico to Libya, a country described as a โhellscapeโ for migrants where some have been SOLD INTO SLAVERY and many have been subjected to extraordinary horrors.

For tonightโs #everynightapoem, one of the Angel Island wall inscriptions.
All we know of its author - aside from surmising that he was Cantonese, male, and working-class - are through his words. Grateful to librarians, park rangers, and all who work to preserve our shared past.
Between 1910-1940, some 175,000 mostly Chinese arrivals were detained on Angel Island. In 1970, when the detention centerโs buildings were due to be torn down, a park ranger noticed that the walls were inscribed with layers upon layers of poetry. Some 200 poems survive.
#everynightapoem
On the anniversary of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, the first of a series of increasingly stringent exclusion laws that not only banned the Chinese but also became a blueprint for racially-charged US immigration policy that persists to this day - sharing a poem from Angel Island.
