They are doing really well. Although George really misses the β€œnature window” aka the patio door at R&D’s place. He doesn’t get chipmunks, squirrels, and rabbits on his porch here 😜

Miss you as well. Things are good in OK! Hope all is well with you too! Maybe I’ll see you in the field this spring?!?

Two of my students won awards at #AMS2026! Mia Smith (@maliyah-wx.bsky.social, current URA) won an Outstanding Student Poster award in the Student Conference. Lindsey Peterson (former URA) won 1st prize in the Societal Applications Symposium student poster competition. I'm super-proud of them both!

Seeing Obama at big sporting events is great but it’s also a reminder that a decade ago we were largely on the right path as a country and we threw it all away for an entire era of boiling hot racist rage.

In January, an EF2 tornado was photographed 1 mile from my apartment complex while I slept peacefully through a barely audible siren. That felt like a sign to get a NOAA weather radio. The only issue now is George, who seems determined to test its durability by chewing the antenna into oblivion.

What the National Center for Atmospheric Research means to the atmospheric sciences Born out of a time of great need for the federal government, NCAR plays a role with few analogues.

Great piece out today in Physics Today on historical origins, contemporary relevance, & fundamental irreplaceability of the National Center for Atmospheric Research, which remains at imminent risk of dismantling for partisan political reasons.

Five ways NCAR has changed our understanding of weather (& saved lives)

The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), an operational research center crucial to furthering our understanding of weather and helping to save lives and property, is at risk of being dismantled. We must not let that happen.

"Online Course
Dual-Polarization Fundamentals
1h 30m - 2h
Description
Once an experimental type of weather radar, dual-polarized (β€œdual-pol”) weather radar is now deployed across the United States and many parts of the world. This lesson will introduce the basic principles of dual-pol weather radar. By the end of this lesson, learners will understand physical meanings of several commonly used polarimetric radar variables, including differential reflectivity, correlation coefficient, differential phase, specific differential phase, and linear depolarization ratio. Examples will be presented demonstrating the distinctive polarimetric signatures of different scatterer types, both meteorological and non-meteorological. Note: This lesson has as a prerequisite the prior lesson, Weather Radar Fundamentals. It is strongly recommended that beginning learners complete that lesson before starting this one."

It was nice to get a small vacation in (even if very brief) after working so hard to complete my Master’s this spring and then immediately jumping into a 2 month field campaign. All very rewarding and amazing experiences, but a couple days on the beach was certainly needed. 😊

After 42 days and 15,000 + miles driven, #ICECHIP completed 24 IOPs across 11 states, including within 75 miles from both the Mexico and Canada borders. This totaled more than 10,000 hailstones collected by our teams while data was gathered on different types of hailstorms!
