"Online Course
Dual-Polarization Fundamentals
1h 30m - 2h
Description
Once an experimental type of weather radar, dual-polarized (β€œdual-pol”) weather radar is now deployed across the United States and many parts of the world. This lesson will introduce the basic principles of dual-pol weather radar. By the end of this lesson, learners will understand physical meanings of several commonly used polarimetric radar variables, including differential reflectivity, correlation coefficient, differential phase, specific differential phase, and linear depolarization ratio. Examples will be presented demonstrating the distinctive polarimetric signatures of different scatterer types, both meteorological and non-meteorological. Note: This lesson has as a prerequisite the prior lesson, Weather Radar Fundamentals. It is strongly recommended that beginning learners complete that lesson before starting this one."

I am so excited to announce that one of the radar meteorology courses that I developed with @comet-meted.bsky.social is now available! "Dual-Polarization Fundamentals" picks up where "Weather Radar Fundamentals" left off! learn.meted.ucar.edu#/online-cour... (Register on learn.meted.ucar.edu first.)

Presented my Master’s thesis research today at @ams41radar.bsky.social characterizing ZDR column behavior using X-band radar observations and simulations in potentially tornadic storms. Huge thanks to @tornatrix.bsky.social for all her guidance and contributions along the way. #radarnerd

It was nice to get a small vacation in (even if very brief) after working so hard to complete my Master’s this spring and then immediately jumping into a 2 month field campaign. All very rewarding and amazing experiences, but a couple days on the beach was certainly needed. 😊

YouTube video by New Scientist These storm-chasing scientists are on the hunt for the world’s most extreme hail

I rode along with the meteorologists chasing the world's most extreme hail storms across the Great Plains in a massive effort improve our forecasts of these damaging events. Thanks to all involved in @nsficechip.bsky.social for having us. Had a hail of a good time. πŸ§ͺ🌩️πŸŒͺ️

Hail yeah! The ICECHIP field campaign (@nsficechip.bsky.social‬) has wrapped up, and the collected hailstones are being housed in the NSF NCAR Cold Lab for further study! πŸŒ¨οΈπŸ”¬ The project involved chasing storms from Montana to Texas to better understand the conditions that produce hail/hailstorms.

After 42 days and 15,000 + miles driven, #ICECHIP completed 24 IOPs across 11 states, including within 75 miles from both the Mexico and Canada borders. This totaled more than 10,000 hailstones collected by our teams while data was gathered on different types of hailstorms!
