Great article by @passblue.bsky.social on US withdrawal of #peacekeeping staff in #SouthSudan - some of my commentary is included in it - www.passblue.com/2025/04/30/u... - but here's one of my key points that is not:

I did not - was really just hit with some serious cognitive dissonance. I've been living in Australia for the last few years - the America I came back to was not the same place I left.

Next time, if there is a next time, I'll be prepared.

I've boarded lots of trains in big cities - never seen this - men showing no uniforms, badges or warrants trying to bully people into submitting to searches...

I just boarded an #Amtrak train in El Paso...

Where 4-6 plainclothes individuals were "racially profiling" people in the line.

I asked what agency they were with - they claimed to be El Paso police.

I don't think a lot of people appreciate what the conflict map looks like right now in the Sudan-Sahel band across Africa. It hasn't quite reached the water's edge in West Africa, but it's getting there, and there isn't really a country spared through to the Horn now. Really grim.

My last tour as a US Marine was with the UN Mission in South Sudan. A lot of the support for America's small contingent of peacekeepers (mail, vehicles, communications) came from the US Embassy - I've been there many times & am well acquainted with how tenuous their "life support" systems are...
