Overwhelming journals with this kind of work wastes everyone's time—editors' and reviewers'—and creates a huge backlog that qualified scholars have to deal with. It's like filling an inbox with spam. [2/3]

This might sound elitist or snobbish, but I get a ton of requests from top-tier journals to peer-review articles, and I'm often shocked by how poor the quality is. They're so bad that it's clear the authors didn't get any training in the field. [1/3]

I had a paper accepted this year, but I later withdrew it with an apology. I won't be attending. The head of the unit told me I'm not the only foreigner who made this decision, and she completely understands. This year, the SBL will have far fewer non-American attendees.
