He is not the same man who set sail from Greenhithe all those years ago, nor does he possess the same stamina. He tires quickly now, & besides the aches and the bad eye and the missing molar, he fears his hair will never regain its proper shine, nor his affect its debonair ease.

The water has helped soothe his throat, but he runs his tongue over his teeth and gums all the same. Once, twice—just to be sure. “Honestly, Francis. I’m just a bit tired, is all.”

That, too, is nothing out of the ordinary.

“Tea’ll be out soon,” Francis says, and then, after a slight pause: “Is it your joints again?”

His voice is low, tender; an ache blossoms in James’s chest.

“No more than usual.” He rubs a hand over his thigh, massaging absentmindedly down toward his kneecap.
