i was watching this zelda video and find this part to be a pretty accurate summary of why i dont really make ninjago lore/theory videos anymore since crystalized dropped

During our career (writing for Spider-Man, Star Wars, Ninjago etc...) we've gotten personal attacks and even death threats over scripts. That's not cool. But a YouTuber with well-thought-out criticism (and no personal attacks) is a healthy thing to have in fandom, even if you disagree with them.

Yeah, I certainly agree there. My posts are mainly targeted at those being overtly hateful; it’s totally fine to disagree or not enjoy the video. I definitely didn’t agree with some of the takes and I feel like there are more charitable ways to look at certain things (like Sora’s arc) and such

also seeing a LOT of men using the negative reception to this video as a springboard to dogpile her for her video about misogyny in ninjago, which is absolutely gross but not surprising as someone who has spent over 10 mins in this fandom

In the end: grow up. Stuff like this gives the Ninjago fandom a bad name and makes it seem like a fandom playing host to emotionally immature and hostile children who don’t want to actually think about the media they watch, which is fine so long as you don’t attack those who do.

I still love Dragons Rising but I can recognize it has flaws; if I hear that other people have issues that I don’t agree with, I can engage in respectful discussion about the difference in interpretation or just continue living my life unbothered that someone disagrees with me.

Then I’d say that’s a sign you’re too attached to Ninjago and you need to take a step back. It suggests your enjoyment of the media is contingent upon it being the “popular” opinion if a single YouTube video can throw you into such a disarray and get you so heated. That’s weak.

I don’t even remotely agree with all the points in her video, but it’s a well-articulated and good faith critique and I’m secure enough in my enjoyment of Dragons Rising to be able to engage with it without feeling like my entire world is crumbling around me. If you can’t…

This fanatical consumption of the show and an unwillingness to engage with anyone whose opinion is different than yours is a mark of real immaturity and a sign that you’re growing up far slower than the actual show is. “Consume product, wait for next product” is a bad mentality.

Healthy criticism is good for a community and for the creators of the art as well. It keeps us grounded, acknowledging that nothing is perfect but still appreciating the successes in spite of the flaws, NOT in the absence of them. Nothing is perfect, especially not Ninjago.

Anybody in the Ninjago fandom who is actually angry at ParachutingKitten’s Dragons Rising video and going after her personally gets no respect from me. People like you who worship Ninjago and its creators as completely above critique are my least favorite part of the fandom.
