Reached a point where I am starting to have β€œinside jokes” with some of my Year 11 classes now and it’s making my lessons with them so much more enjoyable - I love the part where you finally feel like you’re getting to know them and feeling like a team 🀩

I don’t want to know how I’m perceived πŸ˜‚ last year we found a bingo card for another teacher with things like β€œI’ve had enough” and β€œI’ll just wait” on it, and I couldn’t even consider thinking about what would be on mine 🀣🀣🀣

Teaching a gorgeous higher tier Year 10 group at the moment and today one of the girls came in and showed me the revision notes she’s been making at home between lessons 🀩
What a bloody brilliant job we have!

Catching up on #EducatingYorkshire and absolutely loving the correction of β€œNo, it’s not β€˜easy’… it’s well taught!” 🀣

In #MathsToday I did this as a starter on estimation.

With the aim of getting pupils to consider which counters are the 'significant' ones.

Four Operations Completion Tables - Interwoven Maths by Nathan Day (@nathanday314) https://twitter.com/hashtag/FourOpsTables PPT Download PDF Download

Used @nathanday.bsky.social ’s sum-product(-difference-quotient) tables in an intervention session with Y10 in #MathsToday to support their factorisation of quadratics with negatives. Was really helpful to isolate the step of considering all the sign combos! 🀩

Thank you! Hoping resting up over the weekend means I’ll be better, but had to miss a friends wedding party tonight and I’m gutted about it 😒

I’ve had headaches by 1pm every day since Wednesday and then my nose just started streaming on the way home. I was such an awful teacher in my last lesson yesterday too 🀣 brain feels full of cotton wool!
Hope your weekend is super restful so you can go into next week feeling less rubbish 🩷

I’m hoping it’s not COVID cause it absolutely wiped me out last time 😣 I’ve had headaches for a few days but feel reaaaally rough today. Sending good vibes to you too! β€οΈβ€πŸ©Ή

It’s taken three weeks. But I have the lurgy. πŸ€’πŸ˜·
Rumours that a new strain of COVID has wiped out a lot of staff and students at one of my schools, which isn’t ideal 🫣
Welcome back to school life 🀣

Got home to a copy of Coaching Walkthrus which was an unexpected surprise as I haven’t ordered it yet πŸ˜‚
Not sure how it landed on my doorstep - really wanted a copy but currently on a book buying ban πŸ˜‚ so thank you!

I’m across two schools this year and it’s making it hard to remember to share, because I’m second guessing which one I’m heading to on the way in every morning πŸ˜‚ Nevermind sharing cool things we’ve done when I get home!

We also looked at how spotting a difference of two squares can make expending a tripe bracket much more efficient in something like (x+1)(x+2)(x-2), and then practiced moving between xΒ²-aΒ² and (x-a)(x+a) forms - again, sneaking some factorisation in before they could β€œofficially” do it! #mathstoday

One of my absolute favourite things to do without naming it, just showing that we know the two sides of the equivalence at the end. Students can problem solve and reason to find that they need β€œfactors of c that add to b”, then you tell them they can do incredibly impressive maths 😍 #mathstoday

Two questions with gap fills for working in reverse at the end of expanding double brackets lesson, leading to β€œfactorisation” ready for the real deal in their next lesson!
1) gap fills for constants in (x+_)(x+_) = xΒ² +2x + 3x +7
2) gap fills in (_+_)(_+_) = xΒ² +5x __x -10

I keep forgetting to take pictures of cool things we do in #mathstoday to share… so I’ve recreated on notes app πŸ˜‚
Today Y10 were looking at expanding double and triple brackets and absolutely smashed it. So we spent the last 10 mins working β€œin reverse” as a taster for their next lesson…

TikTok - Make Your Day

#mathstoday and Year 8 grabbed every opportunity to suggest 6 7 as a solution to a maths problem. 🀨

We then moved onto substitution with powers and roots.
As ever, squaring a negative number caused issues, then the difference between 3xΒ² and (3x)²… they don’t seem to stick for all students, no matter how many times they see it, with multiple teachers!?
Any great ways to help with it? #MathsToday

Taught my first lesson of the year in #MathsToday! (Actually a cover lesson for a colleague at a family wedding!)
Year 11, recapping algebra skills. Substitution. Generally happy until answers were things like 3/2 - suddenly felt they β€œcouldn’t do it”, so we did lots more to convince them it’s OK!πŸ‘Œ

We did lots of gap fills for those that needed it to half model/check for understanding, and slowly dropped them.

Including values in brackets after the mention of each measure for completeness.
This then extended to Qs with other averages and measures of spread.
Once its embedded it’s generalisable to:
Compare average + context
Compare spread + context

For stats GCSE a few years back we used a model of…
The median of A is greater/less than the median of B, so A is… (contextual comparison)… on average.
The IQR/range of A is greater/less than the IQR/range of B, so the (contextual) for A are more/less consistent.
(+ similar for skew)
