I remember picking up VGC in gen 4 partly because to the extent that any balancing decisions were being made, there was reason to believe they were being made for doubles.

Outrage and Stealth Rock weren't nearly as stupid in that format, for example.

Way too many mons had to rely on Hidden Power for STAB for me to really buy into that without hearing it out in detail.

Also I kinda feel like this discussion gets colored too much by 6v6 Smogon singles when that's never been a relevant format to Game Freak.

I'm hoping that if there's a silver lining to this madness, it's that people eventually realize that poll aggregator projections are comparably worthless and destructive.

So much political airtime is spent on "odds" of success that it's blunted people's will to actually *advocate* for an opinion.

Everyone involved in "prediction markets"--past, present, or future--needs to be imprisoned for life.

So there's like.... all *kinds* of instances I know of in this release that definitely went through human review but just aren't gonna read like that to people who understandably are suspicious.

04.03.2026 06:39 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

The first build I tested had Japanese honorifics all over the script. "Alisa-san" instead of "Alisa," for example. Tons of instances of "it can't be helped," which anyone who plays a lot of J-to-E games knows is a stock thought-terminating cliche that's common in JP but rarely literally used in EN.

04.03.2026 06:38 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

So the idea, basically, is that we are not observing people conversing in English, but conversing in Japanese and we're simply having their conversation subtitled.

Again, I don't think that's a "wrong" choice, but it's an unusual one, and not one that I think an average player is gonna get.

04.03.2026 06:38 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

So a suggestion was to change this to something like "speak clearly," to make the line more about coherence than about the specific language.

The rationale for keeping it the way it was was that this is a game that takes place in Japan and that all of these people are Japanese citizens.

04.03.2026 06:38 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

One of the biggest ones that stands out to me is "Speak Japanese, please." I gather that the original intent (I'm a tester, not a translator) was that the opponent is speaking nonsense and that the player is demanding he speak properly. But that line loses its meaning when translated directly.

04.03.2026 06:38 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Which, like, nothing technically wrong with that. But that stuff isn't gonna read any better now when people think it was the machine that flattened the context and emotion, and not a translator who just didn't have enough context to give it a proper voice.

I playtested this release and am just thinking back to the instances where somebody basically said exactly this. Sometimes suggestions were accepted, but sometimes they weren't, bc the overall direction of the project tilted toward a literal bent.

Strong memories of window-shopping at Babbage's and watching their Sega Saturn floor space gradually shrink from 2 dedicated walls, to 1, and eventually to a small bin in the center of the floor smaller than the used games bin.

And I just don't see the latter happen in other mediums. People are way more willing to call a bad movie bad without having to walk on eggshells to not offend the actors or VFX crew.

There's often this weird focus from both sides where on one hand you'll have gaters dragging individual developers over the coals for no fault of their own, but on the other side you'll have people running interference to excuse a bad product for the sake of the poor grunts who worked on it.

I think Microsoft underestimates how many people have stuck with Windows only because recent version upgrades have tended to be free. Inertia is powerful.

But you'd have a hard time getting me to buy it these days. Renting it? lmao

Power users moving onto greener pastures is one thing, but I'm not terribly thrilled in general of how the future keeps getting increasingly hostile to the casual user.

Last time I went with an arcade front-end (for public use in a Sega-centric convention), I went with Attract Mode Plus. Seemed pretty solid. Haven't compared against many others or gave much consideration to also handling console platforms.

Dems don't want to oppose Trump. They want the same bloodshed in the middle east. It's why all of their complaints are about procedure and paperwork, not the war itself, and why most statements from them have opened with some variant of "the Iranian leader was no angel."

Also:

Because if Democrats actually believed that war with Iran was wrong, then they'd SAY THAT.

Their complaints are about procedure and paperwork. Most statements about operations so far have opened with some variant of "their leader was no angel."

shigesato itoi and shigeru miyamoto interview https://shmuplations.com/itoimiyamoto/
Itoi: Speaking of that mindset… this is a slightly different topic, but take game mechanics, for example. Let's say you have an item in the game that makes you so strong it practically breaks the game. When you look at game magazines, they talk about those items as if it's some bargain for the player. They think it's a good thing, in other words. They don't stop to think, "If you put something like this in, it's not even a game anymore." The idea that anything that gives you an advantage must be "good"β€”it's starting to feel a bit warped to me.

Miyamoto: That's because their goal isn't to inhabit the character and enjoy the experience, it's just to beat the game.

Itoi: I guess they just want to be able to say, "I won!"

Miyamoto: "I finished it in three days," and all that.

Itoi: Boasting about speed in games is a sickness, really.

What now

Like if this had ever happened to me more than once it would have to be burned into my brain as a core memory with how much GE/PD I played, and I do not recall CPU guards ever effectively using grenades as if they were rockets instead.

I do not remember campaign NPCs ever burning the fuse before throwing.

03.03.2026 13:16 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

It's been forever since I've played GE/PD but I'm trying to pick out what would be egregious about this and can't think of it.

Like usually you can just listen for the audio cues and back the fuck off, right?

03.03.2026 10:36 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

The question is only relevant for deathmatch mode btw, not the campaign.

Does the N-Bomb effect (lol) still persist after death in the version you're playing?

One thing you learn to appreciate if you ever get into the hacking side of certain eras of RPGs or VNs or whatever is how "game mechanics" are incorporated into text display. You tend not to think too much about it until you're reverse-engineering and editing the control codes yourself.

Sometimes when giving feedback on games, "play more of the type of game you're making/play them more seriously" is honestly the best most sensible advice even if it comes off rude. It's rly obvious when a dev doesn't have that baseline experience that'd make more particular feedback useful
