Context matters so much. My first attempts at drawing two power ups (soda jetpack and cloud shoe) didn't have Pugzy for reference and once I pulled her into the canvas it changed everything.

Are you familiar with the idea of games as the "aesthetic form of systems"? I think I first encountered the concept via Naomi Clark, but Frank Lantz has also written about it extensively. Systems could be a synonym for state machine.

BIG HOPS combines Mario Odyssey-style fluid movement with Breath of the Wild-style systemic interactions and A Hat in Time-style wit and charm. I created a perpetual chain reaction that spawned hundreds of items with their own physics and the game engine barely even blinked.

Chants of Sennaar and Elsinore both great examples of this

Or we need to study the actual history of games more: folk games, card games, carnival games, sports, electromechanical games, etc etc

The beta release of @gbstudio.dev 4.2 integrates @pdmcdonald.bsky.social's incredible Platformer Plus module into the main #GBstudio app. It's an incredible gift to #indiedevs, so of course I celebrated by creating a gift object and adding a ground pound move to open it.
