to be fair, there are ways i can still become a historian even with a bad memory. im certainly not the first. i just need to practice and work on my retention skills as a whole. i DO remember things, just not as much as i should; it usually lacks too much detail.

autism made me fixate on the most niche historical topic as a child, but then proceeded to give me the worst information retention imaginable so i could never do anything with it. i have similar issues with my other interests as well. my special interest bone is broken

The value of reading history is you know that in 1860 there were abolitionists who were so demoralized that they thought chattel slavery would be permanent. 5 years later those still alive had lived to see its end.

the civil war was not a matter of if, but when. people KNEW this. even jefferson in 1820 wrote "…this momentous question, like a fire bell in the night, awakened and filled me with terror. i considered it at once as the knell of the union." he is referring to slavery. the civil war was about slavery

i swear confeds act like abolitionism was a minority opinion that came out of nowhere as an excuse as if slaves and abolitionists hadn't been fighting for DECADES at that point. this is so clear in literally any history book. you just have to read; also, don't be racist. they can do neither
