I fear it makes us look like we're hopping on a trend when the mechanics were designed to be good for the game in their own right.

Games can look just about as good as MH Wilds and still run way, way better by ditching all this raytraced post processed guff and sticking to baked lighting and well-implemented LOD. Fancier stuff could still be used sparingly!

It's especially prevalent in indie horror games; it feels like we get one unique concept a year and about 30 thousand copycats with a slightly tweaked setting and the same exact structure/premise.
