Great to be a part of helping to develop this guide!

Mentoring and befriending can play a crucial role in improving mental health and helping children and young people reconnect with their families.

New evidence published today highlights just how impactful these relationships can be. ๐ŸŒŸ

Statement reads:

The impact of yesterdayโ€™s Spring Statement, and the welfare cuts that it heralds right across the UK, is hard to accept, or to fathom. At NYAS we have welcomed UK Government commitments to a new child poverty strategy, just as we have welcomed their new โ€™corporate parentingโ€™ duty on all government departments to give special regard and added support to children in and leaving care. Yet itโ€™s hard to see those important promises reflected in cuts to benefits that the governmentโ€™s own calculations say will see poverty levels rise even higher.

The withdrawal of entitlement to PIP (health top up on Universal Credit) for disabled young people under 22 has been given no rationale as a policy except for cost savings. No reflection on the real lives and needs of the young adults who will face isolation and profound hardship without it, at precisely the point in their transition to adulthood when they will need it most. No reflection of any โ€˜corporate parentingโ€™ principle towards those in that age group who are also facing the huge challenge of leaving care at 18.

But the impact will be wider still. The message this announcement sends to all children and families living on benefits, especially those with disabilities, is that they cost more than we can afford as a country. At NYAS we believe the opposite โ€“ our country cannot afford more poverty and destitution. One child in poverty is one too many. One homeless young person is one too many.

We urge the government to listen to the outcry and think again. Listening to the voices of children, young people and everyone most directly affected by government decisions is exactly what our charity is here for โ€“ and we find every day that when we listen, we learn. There could be no better time to show that government is listening than now.

Labour urged to crack down on โ€˜unfairโ€™ guarantor rules which lock renters out Exclusive: Leading charities call on Labour to change the law

We were pleased to coordinate this open letter to Angela Rayner on guarantors signed by 28 organisations.

Far from allowing certain types of tenants access to housing, guarantor requests are often a tool for discrimination. They must be restricted.

Data Collection!

Our first #TrustUsToCare recommendation urges @welshgovernment.bsky.social to publish annual data on care-experienced young women and child protection.๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿผ

To support them we must track how many have children and enter care.๐Ÿ“ข

Local authorities should report on this yearly.
