This account is for birding and natural history, my other is for photography. Am going to try to keep them separate!

Just to report that I drove around an otter killed on the A171 this morning about a third of the way between Lockwood Beck and Scaling reservoir this morning at about 10:20.

Hit by a previous car not much before that…

Petition: Stop the Guga Hunt Calling on the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to amend Section 16 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 to remove the power to grant licences for taking Gannets on Sula Sgeir.

Sign here to voice your disgust at the annual Guga slaughter. Gannets are magnificent and this old β€˜tradition’ needs to end.

Published in 1946 I am finding this to be extraordinary reading.

Author writes of large flocks of Scaup β€œhundreds strong” and β€œβ€¦ Curlew in vast herds, showing no signs of decreasing…”

What we have lost is sad to see…

Feeling unusually organized today, NOT, but I do have all my ducks in a row!

So I suspect we’ll find that, like lots of things, it’s not worth the paper it’s written on.

Fieldfares in the hawthorns at Sutton Bank, North Yorkshire (UK). These beautiful thrushes are winter visitors to the UK, though numbers vary. It’s impressive how such large, striking birds can almost vanish among a tangle of branches, berries and grey winter sky. Watercolour painting.
