Redirecting

Sustainable management of wild-harvested plants is crucial. 🌍 Our study is a first national step, showing both richness and risks. We need stronger coordination and regulations to secure these resources.

Conservation paradox: WHP look less threatened—96% are “Least Concern” in France vs. 78% for all plants. ⚠️ Yet some protected species are still harvested. This gap shows weak regulation and the need for local conservation actions.

Is there a “harvesting syndrome”? 🤔 Our results show availability drives selection. WHP are widespread, especially in the Alps and the Mediterranean south. Ecologically, they share traits with the French flora—no special resilience to harvest.

We found WHP in 110 families and 431 genera. Phylogeny matters little—other factors drive harvesting. Uses: medicinal (37%), food (20%), artisanal (14%). Leaf cutting dominates harvesting practices (64%), but destructive methods could affect ~60% of species.

Did you know that wild plant harvesting is an ancient practice that remains vital—from medicine to food and cosmetics? 🌿
Yet its ecological impact is overlooked. In a new study, we assessed 692 species in France (12% of the flora) to uncover drivers and conservation gaps.

First post on Bluesky! 🌿
Excited to share our new study in Ecography, led by Maxime Lenormand: combining naturalist inventories and satellite data to map plant biodiversity.
Here’s a bioregionalization of the flora of France!
