Next month I promis to be more enthusiastic again, but I felt obliged to dissect this song this month. For now: Peace and B loved!

Some birdsounds are also to be heard and there is a minimalistic guitar on the background.
And basically that’s all there is. It’s slick song, commercial as hell, which became a huge hit and made Warner look like a fool.

Musically it’s easy to describe. It’s driven by keys, bass and the distinct drumming of Michael B. (hey, I just found another positive note).

He sings it in his falsetto, except for the bridge, and the vocal parts are by far the best part of this song.

Although I must admit is catchy as hell with the basic structure of 2 verses and choruses, bridge, chorus fade out. So I do understand its hit potential and the fun of that lies in the big finger to WB.

Let’s move to the song. The reason I don’t like it, is because of the fact that it’s a slick, typical 90s R&B song, which makes the enamel crack of my teeth

For the videoclip he asked women around the world to send in their photo to pick the most beautiful girl.

The song was released on 14 February 1994 and later included slightly different on The Gold Experience.

The story behind the song is way more interesting than the song itself. Prince had his beef with Warner and by changing his name to 0(+> he tried to dodge his contractual obligations.

Various of the mixes of the song were made (I dislike the Mustang Mix the least), but I’m talking about the single version here.

This month is the month of Valentine and Prince has 1 song explicitly written for the Day of Love. It’s probably one of my least favourite songs, but hey I’ll take one to preserve the legacy. 😉

I’ve always felt that Free is a bit underrated in the Prince catalogue and I hope I’ve been able to explain why this is a very special Prince song.

We’ve been listening to a lot of Prince brilliance. First of all his vocal strength and his guitar playing, but let’s not forget his craftmanship in creating brilliant songs. The structure of the song is close to perfect and the production is marvellous.

From the bridge he screams himself into the chorus for the last time and then after this peak moment, the peace returns. The guitar is resisting a little bit, when the piano accompanies the song to its calm ending and it slowly fades out.

This leads to the crescendo where Prince start screaming like the best soul singers in history, accompanied by a howling guitar and the ladies remain their cool as they keep singing calmly in the background as Prince pours his heart out.

This part starts with The soldiers are a marching and lyrically prince reminds us to fight for our right to be free. Musically the song reaches its highlight. In the back of the mix you can hear a phenomenal Prince singing in his normal register and the guitar is screaming in excitement.

The guitar is added in typical Prince style; mixed to the background and slowly building to the climax.
In the 2nd verse everything that was added in the chorus is preserved as we prepare ourselves for the bridge.

Then Prince comes in playing piano and gently singing in his falsetto. Carefully the bass is added to the song as we roll into the chorus where we can hear Prince’s multi-layered vocals together with Wendy, Lisa, Vanity and JJ.
