First Time in 100 Years: Young Kayakers on a Ride for the Ages
At of time of so much devastating news, here is a story with a happy ending.
Indigenous youth are kayaking 300 miles down the Klamath Riverโfrom the headwaters to the seaโa feat not possible for 100 years until the largest dam removal in history. ๐ฉต๐ง๐ฉต

Maine Sea Grant regains funding after industry, congressional pushback
The Maine Sea Grant program regained funding just days after the Trump administration cut funding without warning
It looks like Maine Sea Grant is being reinstated, thanks in large part to the massive public outcry, including by our working waterfront. Celebrate the wins, because they show us what works and energize us for the next round. ๐ช๐ป ๐ ๐ฒ

Today I was told to take out a line about being a mentor to students from diverse backgrounds and historically underrepresented groups from my biosketch for a proposal, because it might damage our chances of getting federal funding.
How has it come to this? I feel absolutely sick.

Trans, intersex, and queer people will always exist because humans are biological creatures and biology - inevitably and always - creates variability and diversity.
If there is any โbiological truth,โ itโs that a biological system will never conform to the strictures of human machinations.

Empty barnacle shells in the low intertidal
More empty barnacle shells in the low intertidal
Even more empty barnacle shells
Lots and lots of empty barnacle shells
Interesting observation in the lower intertidal: thousands upon thousands of dead barnacles in the last month or so, with intact shells left behind! (Zoom in and see)
Mid/upper barnacles are all fine, so best guess is that the winter tides allow predators to go unchecked? Very curious. ๐๐ฆ

The Loss of Beneficial Thermal Priming on Global Coral Reefs
Periods of unusually warm ocean temperatures, known as marine heatwaves, have increased due to climate change, which can cause the bleaching and death of tropical corals. One way in which corals can ....
Warming up, just not too hard, can help you survive an intense workout. In a new study led by Xinru Li, we found that "priming" - sub-lethal exposure to heat stress - can also help coral reefs survive heat waves... provided the heat waves are not too severe.

Deep sea mining plans blocked in Norway ๐ณ๐ด๐ซ
Environmental groups described the news as a โhistoric winโ for ocean protection.
Oslo had planned to let companies apply to mine 280,000 sq km (108,000 sq miles) of its waters, an area greater than the UK, for deep-sea minerals.
