πŸ•΅πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ I had the chance to visit the King’s Bastion in Gloucester. It’s rarely opened up but I got to chat with @andyrpglevum.bsky.social & Amy Washington @museumofgloucester.bsky.social about the history beneath our feet.

HERs really vary with this data and DM teams in their awareness of it. Worcestershire are good

Soon afterwards (unless I forget) the same Osric founded the minster of St Peter's in Gloucester. Which was to become the present day cathedral

Very cool, in Gloucester we use the presence of the Cheltenham sand and gravel as a possible indicator of palaeolithic material but it's very ad hoc. One day we'll improve

This is great data, do you work with local HERs?

View through the dimly lit Anglo-Saxon crypt at St Wystan’s Church, Repton, Derbyshire, showing stone columns, ribbed arches and soft golden light; an atmosphere of ancient stillness.

😯 ✨Betjeman described it as 'Holy Air Encased in Stone'.

If you've never visited St. Wystan's in Repton before - deep below the surface - that first glimpse of the C9th Saxon crypt is quite something.

A worn and damaged image carved in stone. A circle with a decorative motif frames a figure of Jesus Christ, evident from the cruciform halo behind the head. His hair is seen under a stole wrapped round his head and down over his shoulders, but his face is damaged. On the left within the circle looking toward Christ is a large bird, which is thought to represent the Holy Spirit.

#SundayStonework figure found c. 150 years ago in Bishop's garden @gloucestercathedral.org.uk is possibly sole remnant of #SaxonSunday Abbey founded there 7th C.
Cruciform halo indicates it is Christ, bird pos figure of holy spirit, border may show Byzantine/Carolingian influence.

Portrait: faded but still detectable wall painting of the Magi visiting the infant Jesus (held by Mary). To the right and below are stained glass and intricately carved stonework.

Fascinating discussion between @drjaninaramirez.bsky.social, @stroudstory.bsky.social and @andyrpglevum.bsky.social this morning at #GloucesterHistoryFestival about the gorgeous Adoration of the Magi wall painting (c. 1520) at St Mary de Crypt, Gloucester.

Despite widespread claims, there are not many mediaeval pubs still serving. The ones that survive are all inns. The best preserved is the New Inn at Gloucester. We know from tree-ring dating that construction began in 1432 and it was first mentioned in the records in 1455 🧡

We weren't stunned. We had a desk based assessment which which said 'its a churchyard' then an evaluation which found human burials. I've rarely been less stunned.

I will be involved on Wednesday the 17th between 7.15-8.00pm discussing recent efforts to reinterpret and explain the contested history of George Whitefield in St Mary De Crypt Church. Thought provoking stuff and an issue to be found in many a church and public building.

The Cameron-Osborne years offer an important reminder that it is possible to excel at the theatre of politics - to "look prime ministerial", to dominate the "media narrative", to project "competence" and to communicate a clear political "story" - while being strikingly inept at governing.

Roman frescoes reassembled in London after
1,800 years
One of the largest collections of painted Roman wall plaster ever discovered in London has been uncovered in Southwark, offering an extraordinary glimpse into the decoration of a high-status Roman building that was demolished almost 2,000 years ago.
The fragments were recovered by archacologists from MOLA (Museum of London Archacology) during excavations at The Liberty a development site that has already revealed a Roman mausoleum and intricate mosaic flooring. The painted plaster had been dumped in a pit following the demolition of a Roman structure sometime before AD 200. It is thought that the building had originally stood between AD 43 and 150.
Over the course of three months, MOLA senior building material
specialist Han Li painstakingly sorted
and reconstructed the shattered fragments, comparing colours, motifs, and painted borders to reassemble sections of the original compositions.
"This has been a 'once in a lifetime'
moment," said Li."I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness when I started to Lay the plaster out. It was like assembling the world's most difficult jigsaw puzzle." The resulting reconstructions reveal a series of repeating bright yellow panels, a rare motif in Roman Britain, decorated with birds, fruit, flowers, and lyres. Yellow panel designs of this kind have only been identified at a handful of other sites, including Fishbourne Roman Palace. Their repetition here suggests the room was designed to impress, emphasising the owner's cultural refinement and wealth.
Some fragments imitate exotic building materials, including red porphyry from Egypt and African giallo antico marble. The wall painting styles show influences from across the Roman world, with parallels found at Xanten and Cologne in Germany;
Lyon in France, and Pompeil in Italy The site has also yielded remarkable graffiti. One piece shows a nearcomplete Greek alphabet, the only known example from Roman Britain, possibly used as…

Hi there, so currently the post excavation work is ongoing. This includes osteological examination of the human remains. So no reburial as yet. As for where the reburial will, ultimately, take place - I'm afraid I don't know. I would approach the UoG if you're keen to find out.

How much are tuition fees in the UK and is university worth it? Tuition fees have risen, while maintenance loans have also gone up to help students with rising living costs.

Also potentially the blueprint for the crypt of St. Oswald's in Gloucester. Founded by what was left of Mercian royalty in the early 10th century.
