This very much chimes with what I wrote in my @ascl-uk.bsky.social blog this week in response to the PMโ€™s pledge for schools to โ€˜guaranteeโ€™ post-16 destinations: www.ascl.org.uk/News/Blog/Oc...

The Prime Minster announced a bold ambition this week, where schools will play a greater role in ensuring every pupil has a clear post-16 destination. This must be matched with infrastructure, funding and collaborative frameworks, writes @c-jgreen.bsky.social in her latest blog: ow.ly/tSFB50X6ac1

Welcome to @c-jgreen.bsky.social as ASCL Post-16 and Skills Specialist. In her first blog, she writes that post-16 #education isn't just about qualifications, and calls for holistic reform in the sector, matched by investment in infrastructure, services and support: ow.ly/uRVW50X0OSb

A post-16 system that maintains breadth of choice is the best way for @departmentforedu.bsky.social to meet our future skills needs.
Letโ€™s protect what works while we build whatโ€™s new.

๐Ÿ“Š The Sixth Form Colleges Associationโ€™s brilliant report โ€˜Creating Gaps, Causing Uncertaintyโ€™ shows the real value of AGQs, and the risks if theyโ€™re scrapped.

Many of the most subscribed BTECs are in these sectors (see pic).
With T-levels & AAQs not yet seeing the same uptake, maintaining AGQs is a sensible move.
Letโ€™s not risk losing valuable routes for young people. ๐Ÿš

The governmentโ€™s priority skills areas include:

๐Ÿ”น Clean Energy
๐Ÿ”น Creative Industries
๐Ÿ”น Housebuilding
๐Ÿ”น Defence
๐Ÿ”น Digital & Tech
๐Ÿ”น Financial Services

Alongside this, a further pause in defunding Level 3 Applied General Qualifications (AGQs) is surely the best way forward - especially with slow AAQ and T-level uptake.

We must keep all pathways open into priority skills areas. ๐Ÿ“ˆ

๐ŸงตGood to see @@departmentforedu.bsky.social has updated guidance to include new Alternative Academic Qualifications (AAQs) in 16-18 performance measures from 2026/27.
Providers now have surety: AAQs are approved, funded & will count. โœ…

Finding the right measure of disadvantage for our 16-19 evaluations Exploring indicators of disadvantage to guide 16โ€“19 evaluation choices

Fascinating blog from @theeef.bsky.social on the definition of โ€˜Disadvantagedโ€™ at 16-19. We need more โ€˜joined upโ€™ thinking on this if weโ€™re to mitigate the widening disadv gap, esp in the context of regional variation in outcomes & quals reform.
