Dear history fans, what objects would you like to see in an exhibition on privateering & life at sea in the 18th century? Everyday objects, letters, navigational instruments, or something unexpected? It will also explore forced migration. Iβd love to hear your thoughts #earlymodern #maritimehistory

I can't believe I'm posting this video - but we actually have to have a conversation about the real world implications of America going to war over Greenland.
Let me walk you through it. It doesn't turn out well for us.

6 February deadline. Obviously a very difficult time in the history of academia to ask for voluntary labour, but our ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals relies upon it, and it's a great way of both using and developing expertise. Open to current Fellows of the Royal Hist. Soc. #Skystorians

A reporter just asked the U.S. president a perfectly legitimate question about his attorney general's vow to prosecute people for constitutionally protected speech.
He responded by threatening to prosecute the reporter.
The threat itself is an abuse of power. It ought to be an impeachable offense.

17.07.2025 15:08 β π 3784 π 1303 π¬ 57 π 144Call for papers for the Conflict, War and Violence in the Early Modern World Conference, taking place at the University of Exeter on 30-31 October. We are exploring early modern conflict in all its forms. We particularly seek to unpack the interactions between the more traditional aspects of conflict, such as the political, tactical and strategic, with the more human side of it, including sociocultural approaches that explore experiences, representations and impacts of violence. As such, we particularly welcome proposals that look beyond purely military history and break chronological, geographical and disciplinary boundaries. We welcome proposals for individual papers of up to 20 minutes, or full panels of three to four papers, on any aspect of conflict, war and violence in the early modern period. Speakers might consider, but are not limited to, the following themes: Physical, tactical, operational and strategic aspects of warfare. Martial identities, values and motivations. Notions of gender, race, class and religion. Remembering, (re)imagining and representing violence and/or conflict. The experience of violence, its impact and the everyday at war. Popular allegiance in early modern conflict. Maritime violence and naval warfare. The bureaucracy of conflict, finance and the law. Abstracts of up to 300 words, along with a biographical note, should be sent to earlymodernwar@gmail.com by Friday 5th September.
We are thrilled to announce that the Conflict, War and Violence in the Early Modern World Conference, with a keynote address by Professor Mark Stoyle, will be held on 30-31 October at the University of Exeter.
Please help us spread the world, and consider submitting a proposal!π‘οΈ

Some thoughts about the military parade in my hometown of Washington DC today -- specifically, the route. Military parades in DC are quite rare. But when they happen, they have always begun, symbolically and geographically, at the Capitol and moved outward. 1/
