For Bark, this is more than just a story about threats to fish and wildlife, though these are important. As Bark's Forest Watch Program Manager, Jordan Latter, puts it, "This is a story about power and influence over water, a human right that is foundational to the well being of all people."

Plus, Google has a history of making backroom deals with the city. In 2021, The Oregonian sued Google for public records about their water use in The Dalles after the company tried to hide this information, claiming it was a “trade secret."

Despite the city’s claims that Google played no role in this bill, Google’s data centers are increasing pressure on the city’s water supply. And despite Bentz's claim that he consulted with the Forest Service, Mt. Hood staff were not aware of the bill before Bark brought it to their attention.
